The housewarming open-house went smoothly, with a light parade of friends (mostly folks I know through Charlie, including our landlord and lady, some theater students and a prof, but also the ladies who run a local coffee oasis). Some will be closer friends hereafter. In the morning hours, Charlie made crepes, which he does exceptionally well, and I laid out the sweet and the savory fillings. My favorite was a blend of both: the grated-apple sauce with bits of breakfast sausage in, rolled up and... Sign in to see full entry.

"I've Grown Accustomed to My Space..."
As I live here day after day, sorting my selected stuff, using the kitchen, forming the habits of living here, I notice something interesting: Every day, familiarity grows. I don't open the wrong drawer in the kitchen for a thing. When I need an outlet, I can go straight to it, instead of hunting. Actions become routine instead of novel. It's like my son said about the kitchen: It was like a new kitchen--now it's a kitchen. But it applies now to the living room, and the bedroom, not just the... Sign in to see full entry.

projects proceeding...
The workroom has begun to emerge from under boxes and stuff... I cleaned and set up three card-tables today, to begin the actual organization of stuff. Sewing machine in one corner... photo frames and prints and the cutter for trimming edges, in another. There will, naturally, be a yarn corner, though the room is running low on useable corners. I planted the scarlet runner beans today, and two pots with sweetpeas. I watered them, and waited... It has been over an hour, and they have not sprouted... Sign in to see full entry.

A room full of straw to be spun into gold...
A room full of boxes to be opened, contents distributed throughout the house... spun into home. Some things I am delighted to create new places for. There's a very nice collection of history books, including the 11 volumes of Ariel and Will Durant's THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION, got a few years ago at a thrift shop. There is one of the best books about Elizabeth I, by Elizabeth Jenkins ELIZABETH THE GREAT. Next to it, LETTERS OF THE QUEENS OF ENGLAND 1100-1547, and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HENRY THE... Home
We got in late last night, near 11:30, after about a 14-hour drive. We had to stop and get some food and kitty litter before actually landing at home. I was ready to sleep... and then, didnt'. Partly because Violetta missed Charlie when he went out of sight to sleep in his own place. She stood at the front door and called loudly for him. She has eaten and drunk, much more than she did over the past two days, and she has acknowledged the proper usage of the cat box. She has explored, and slept in... Sign in to see full entry.

Travel journal, Day One, The Night
After a reasonably pleasant drive down Washington, along the mighty Columbia River for many miles, then southwest across Oregon and finally into southern Idaho, we spent the night in a town called Bliss. One motel town, two restaurants... being generous there... and to summarize, we would not sleep nor eat here again. You might say, we are Blissed off. The motel owner is a great tightwad, disliking the whole cat idea, charging us extra, and yet desiring us to keep the beast confined in her... Sign in to see full entry.

She doesn't know her whole world is about to change...
Violetta, my 13-year old cat, has been sleeping beside me, by my feet, over my shoulder, tucked under the covers with her head resting on my middle, nearly every night since I got back here. I think she missed one, being comfortable elsewhere and wanting not to be taken for granted. I've missed her companionship all the while and times I've been away, and it's quite clear I am her favorite Warm Spot and Feeder. I acquired her in 2000, answering an ad in the paper. She'd been a barn-kitten,... Sign in to see full entry.

The sun is glowing afternoon gold...
and shining through the spring green leaves, dappling the truck, packed and tarped and netted-over. We will drive off, if all goes to plan, at 8 tomorrow morning, and about 4 or 5 hours later we'll be taking the long slow haul up a three-mile grade south of Pendelton, Oregon. That hill splits the east- and west-bound traffics, and each way has a view point looking out towards western Oregon. The east-bound is not as high as the other, but it is still dramatic. If the air is clear, we'll stop and... Sign in to see full entry.

Packing...
Charlie is an excellent packer: nearly all the truck can hold is in the truck now, and it is looking pretty secure with wedging and bungees and a bungee-net overall. We then went for a drive, going through several tight round-abouts, and nothing fell out, nor did the truck fall over. Very encouraging. So we went to the storage unit, and added two carpets (rolled and wrapped) and a few other useful things, like the truck tire chains. I'd wondered where they were... In fact, there were a number of... Sign in to see full entry.
