Christmas Eve dawns with drama

Not the theater, but the sky kind... and Violetta is there to watch... http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Sign in to see full entry.

A little excitement...

I was broiling a couple of burgers, and sauteeing onions and mushrooms on the stove, everything going along nicely... turned to the window to say hello to the lithops there--one shows a hint of new growth! And this is the time of year to water the little things, desert flora that they are. And when I turned around again, there was a fire burning merrily under the saute pan! Well! No salt to dowse it with--I am not going to use my pink Himalayan salt for putting out fires! Besides, it was burning... Sign in to see full entry.

TAPS...?

Are you there? Are you coated in ice? I am guessing maybe you lost your electricity. I hope you are home and cozy by candle-light! Likewise our other friends who got iced overnight... Annicita, in Saint Louis, I believe... And PatB is in the neighborhood, though she posted this morning... We've heard from Kabu and Wiley, and from Naut, who also enjoyed a share of it. The ice is beautiful... but it's a treacherous beauty! I hope you are all warm and safe! Sign in to see full entry.

Hoarfrost, daybreak, and the moon

The sun came up brilliant in a nearly clear sky this morning, and touched the hoarfrost with light, and later, with warmth: the frost was gone by 9AM. But I did get some pictures of the sun coming up, and then went to the front of the house, and found the moon--a waning gibbous moon--going down. And Pike's Peak is back, after hiding behind mists and snowfall for some little time. The tops of the blue spruce trees abound with cones that look very much like fir cones. With the frost, they are... Sign in to see full entry.

News on a frosty day

Overnight, the frost came again... and this morning the twigs and branches, and all things are dressed in white. It is too grey a day for sparkles, but one can imagine! I took a few shots... http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ In other news... For weeks, the neighbors behind us have had a fluttering plastic sheet over their roof. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, they got a new roof. Interesting to watch the crew of half a dozen men, first destroying and then creating a nice new... Sign in to see full entry.

Last of the Bull of Knossos: masks

There were three essential masks for this production. You can see them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/ Charlie has a full videotape of the show, and plans to put it up on Youtube. I'll let you know when he does. Meanwhile, it is a lovely day here with temps in the mid-60sF, and the ice has gone from my driveway at last, and most other places. The little birds who nearly emptied the tube bird feeder during the hard freeze are not around so much. Madame LaDarque shows up at least... Sign in to see full entry.

The excerpts of the show are now available.

I've sent a few out, but now I'm wondering how they might be added on here. Can anyone help with this? It took literal hours to load them to Google Drive, another new thing I never asked for. I mean to get some still shots of the masks and some of the props, then those will be up on Flickr. Meanwhile, it is 5pm-ish and the sun is going down on a warmish day--we have a few more of those promised, until it gets chilly again by the end of the week. Pike's Peak is silhouetted against the dark blue... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bull of Knossos -- part 3 The Players

I am loading some excerpts of the show, but they are much too long for Flickr, so I must use other means, namely Google Drive, and will email the links when they are up. If you'd like to see, email me so I have your email address. The Players, portrayed by seven student actors, are: Athenean Maids and Youths Theseus Palace guards (2) King Minos, Queen Passifae, Princess Ariadne Daedalus The Fates--three of them Nemesis The Labyrinth Walls (4 of them) The Minotaur. There are also a Sound... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bull of Knossos -- part 2: The Black Box

The space is a room defined by curtain walls and a ceiling of pipes from which lights are rigged. It's all black: curtains, walls, floor and ceiling, and it is limited in size, hence the term for such a space: the Black Box. A Black Box is simply a space in which a stage or set can be built or not; seating is arranged however it suits the production. Without a show, it is merely a black and empty cube. As the audience gathers, there is music, a bit exotic, though not janglingly Greek... Sign in to see full entry.

The Bull of Knossos

It's a devised performance, a kind of experimental theater in which the actors work without a script. They begin with a story, and in rehearsals, find ways to convey it, ways new and original. It is very much a co-creative experience with ideas flowing from all the players. This one began a few years ago with discussions of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Charlie discovered Mary Renault's books based on that myth: THE KING MUST DIE and THE BULL FROM THE SEA. She interpreted the myth cycle... Sign in to see full entry.
