Charlie has a birthday party!

Some of it was at his house, watching movies I don't have much interest in, and the cake... I should say, "cake"... was constructed here, and he and his friends came over here for that and the Tribute Giving. The cake... "cake"... I had a brilliant notion, but it lacked just about everything in execution. It began as several flat pans of brownie two of which eventually declined to leave their pyrex dishes. The largest, baked in an aluminum pan, actually did come out, even mostly intact. I could... Sign in to see full entry.

Last of the summer whine

The morning is again cool and sweet, but like yesterday, the afternoon will be hot. Rain, cooling and calming, is not in the forecast. Yesterday, the thermometer in my living room upstairs was in the 90s F, so I spent much of it downstairs where it was in the 70s. Where are those wonderful thunderstorms when you want them? I do NOT like the heat! Like a little rodent, I retreat to the deeps of my den... Downstairs, I have set up my scribing station. Years ago, I taught myself to write a kind of... cookin' fish!

Charlie and I have been trying to make proper British-style fish'n'chips. We use a larger fillet than Americans expect from the nuggetized bits generally served here, and we've experimented with various ways and means of breading. It's a tasty project, but not the healthiest way to eat fish. So I have been experimenting further. I have fillets of swai, a bit larger than tilapia, but also a light-flavored white fish. Two of these set on top of a bed of cole slaw (creamy or half-pickled), dressed... Sign in to see full entry.

A haiku not my own

One of the great things about haiku--the refinement of image and notion to a formally laid out metaphor--is that it is easy to remember. This one I have remembered for years, and it still delights me! The butterfly lifts the cat two or three feet. This is a translation from the Japanese where the syllables were no doubt correctly 5/7/5. It seems that it isn't the counting that is as important as the imagery. Sign in to see full entry.

Now she's got me doing it...

Darkness whispering of sleeping and coming dreams Soft rainfall at night The sugar-pea vine finally reduced to straw Morning glory blooms The bird-seed scattered turns bright faces to the sun Who'm I to argue? Sign in to see full entry.

Following TAPS lead... Two haiku of a late summer storm

The tempest thunders pouring buckets then softly gleams; sun and rainbows. The storm, finally passed glitters in leaves and branches Silent, the rainbow. Sign in to see full entry.

Time passes...

I've been here every day, reading and sometimes commenting, but on the whole, not much in the mood to write. There are a few shots in the camera, and one of these days those will go up on flickr. It's cool enough in the mornings now for a sweater: another sign of summer passing into fall. I anticipate the lovely colors a month or so away... and with less joy, another season of cold wherein the utility bills go way high again, and being warm enough contends with the household economy. This... Sign in to see full entry.

Bare-foot Gal

When I was a child in Redding, California, I loved going barefoot all summer. The concrete sidewalks were smooth and hot, but not too hot. The black asphalt street--now, that was too hot, and if for any reason I needed to get to the other side, it was a dance across the stinging black surface, to reach concrete safety on the other side. The lawn was lovely beneath the feet, but there were hidden dangers, never seen ahead of time: I hated the stings of the honeybees that were busy about their... Sign in to see full entry.

What a satisfying day!

The living room is re-arranged and the former downstairs bedroom is becoming a display room for the various costuming items in my collection. Right now, it's mainly Ren Faire Wear, Victorian/"steampunk', some authentic antique and retro items, and some odd hats and accessories. The mom and her three kids will be here Saturday rather than Friday, and things will be ready for them. Much laundry was done today, to freshen up some items that have been stored in Charlie's garage. Steampunk, if you... Sign in to see full entry.

Moving right along...

In the past several days since my housemate so gracelessly made his exit, I have noticed several things, further insights sparked by that event First, for the first time in several months, I am relaxed. It is stressful to have a stranger in the house, to feel constantly observed and judged. The funny thing is, whether or not he or anyone is judging my lifestyle, it boils down to the fact that I, myself, am judging it, and that judgement I project onto others who are in a position to see my...
