Saw a show last night...

The plain truth is, I have a deep-seated antipathy towards bodily waste. As long as I can remember, the disgust seems bottomless... so to speak... even knowing it is quite natural, a part of living in a body. Feeling so often overcomes knowing. Maybe I had an unfortunate toilet-training. The point is, some essential part of my personality shies away, disapproves, even disdains the title: URINETOWN, THE MUSICAL. But we had comp tickets and it is a show that has won awards on Broadway, is highly... Sign in to see full entry.

Owwww...

Gout has made a reappearance. Earlier in the week, my right foot ached in a particular place, and I finally realized, I know this ache... Some years ago, it was an occasional crippling that came on after eating certain foods, or twisting an ankle. It took a ridiculously long time for the doc to acknowledge that it was indeed gout, and to prescribe a medication that re-organizes how the body metabolizes uric acid, which, micro-crystalizing in the joints, causes such misery. I have not had a... Sign in to see full entry.

Lament

When the night goes dark, all glowing wild eyes dimmed and dead; When the forest goes silent of song and cry and roar and there is only the creaking of trees moved by the rush of wind; When flowers no longer hum with the dancing bee; When the sky is empty of wings that glitter and crackle or softly beat the air; When water is wild and foul and dry dust bakes unsheltered from the sightless sun; When the heart of humanity is broken with loneliness and shame, saying and knowing We had the warnings,... Morning birds, and a Little House update

The birds start singing around 4, just before dawn. Sometimes they are busy on the bird feeder on the front deck: house finches, sparrows, and sometimes the ring-neck doves. This morning, it was the sparrows in the lush lilac bushes out back. With all the rain of the past several months, the lilac bushes--nearly trees!--are thick with bright green leaves. I was enjoying other flowers and trees across the sea while these brought out their white flowers. Not complaining, mind you. My... Sign in to see full entry.

A place to move on from...

Yesterday I came across a song, a broken love song. Today I went looking for it and found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7ZvvQEhMJg Some of you here know my very personal agenda with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, that my belief that our society's failure in parenting wisdom has led to CPTSD being endemic, more of us trying with more or less success to live with the self-abandonment that childhood betrayals taught us. This song could be our anthem, just as BREAD AND ROSES... Sign in to see full entry.

Eye surgery coming up

In about a month, I will be going back to Seattle to get started on this whole fixing-the-eyes business. It would be great to see clearly without the interference of cataracts, and to not have the double-vision and focus problems from 'wrinkled' retinas. The first is a fairly standard surgical procedure. The second is trickier, and not done nearly as often. My eye-doc in Seattle said he could only recommend three surgeons in Washington State to do it. The catch is, of course, that there are no... Sign in to see full entry.

Another warm Sunday...

Heat enervates me, which isn't what it sounds like. I don't feel much like doing much, especially thinking or writing. But then... even on dull days, something interesting comes up, and inspires again. Today, it is seeing that the morning glory sprouts have begun to send out tendrils, reaching for things to climb. In a week or two, the first blossoms might be opening: deep blue ones, and some bright red ones! The nasturtium leaves are also leaning towards the sunlight, and one of these days will... It was baba ghanouj...

If anyone knows what it should be called now, I'd love to hear! Baba ghanouj is a popular Mediterranean (several different nationalities make a version of it) dip made with a severely roasted eggplant, even burnt, to get a nice smokey flavor in it. The eggplant goop is mixed with tahini, stuff like peanut butter but made of sesame seeds. I often use hummus, though, which is chickpeas mashed to creaminess and mixed with tahini. I get the garlic flavored kind as garlic is also essential to the... Sign in to see full entry.
