Violetta, my 15 yr old cat, is suffering from feline diabetes. She drinks a lot of water, and some days I can't offer her any food she will eat. It has been several days now, she's been on the Just Water, Please diet, and she hangs out in the back of the closet, in a sort of den. I check on her, and she meows and after a moment comes bounding out to check on things. We were up three times last night, trying to get her to eat something. We tried tuna in oil, just a spoonful, and an egg yolk, and... Sign in to see full entry.

Grilled sammiches!
I don't bother too often, and I don't use cheese much any more, but today I just had a hankerin' for a grilled treat, and slapped together some turkey out of a package, a bit of sliced sweet onion, and some of the home-made cranberry sauce from the holidays. I poured a bit of olive oil in the skillet--better in several ways than using butter, and grilled it with only the little problem of nothing in it to hold the stuff together. Careful wielding of a wide spatula managed the job. It was tasty! Sign in to see full entry.

Not low-fat, but the right fat
Breakfast this morning: Violetta, two egg yolks. Me, an egg-whites scramble with shredded cabbage, fresh salmon, sweet onion and a bit of pink salt fried in a tablespoon, or so, of canola oil. Oh, and some sliced avocado on top. Pretty as well as tasty! Outside, the mountain and the air around it are softest pink. The new snow on Pike's Peak grows brighter as I write... Last night, early in the darkness, the slenderest of crescent moons hung there like a bowl over the Rampart Range. I remember... Sign in to see full entry.

Morning light and new snow on the mountain
I was up before dawn, sat and watched that ghost mountain go from white against dark blue sky, to rose and gold and now brilliant white against bright blue. Sunny and clear, but single-digit cold out there! Charlie got me in to watch the final dress rehearsal of the play for which he is a stage-hand this time around. It is called DETROIT and, while the acting was good--a professional group of 4 actors, and the overall theme is worthy, I just didn't care for the play itself. It involves the... Well, that was exciting!
Driving Charlie to his teacher job this morning took us slowly up the street and down towards the place where that street merges with a bigger busier road with a brief merging lane. No problem, usually--just wait for the current glut of traffic to pass, and slip right in. But it has been snowing quite a bit overnight, and slipping took on a whole new significance, as we came to the pausing place, the merging place... and neither paused nor merged, but slid straight out into the glut of traffic.... The school called...
That's a phrase that has aroused a varying emotional response over the years... Now, it's a happy one: Charlie has been called to sub-teach some art classes next week, for two days. That should be a lot of fun for props-maker Charlie, and his substitute students! Or... what do you call the students of a substitute teacher, in two words? Sign in to see full entry.
Dream Chameleons
I dreamed of a humming bird flying into my room while I lay on the bed with Violetta curled up beside me. The little thing was fearlessly inquisitive, zipping about, pausing to look closely at me and at Violetta and some other things. I was a little worried, knowing how fast a cat can move, and how irresistably the small moves of small animals draws them. But the wonder and delight outweighed that worry, and all went well. Later, I dreamed of creating a habitat for a pair of chameleons--a... Sign in to see full entry.

The day in bits
4:30AM Thoughts can wake you up and keep you awake. A book can drown them out. 5AM Went back to bed. 7:30AM The wind blew a bit late yesterday, and the temperatures are rising today. The beautiful, magical snow-world is gone. Fine by me, I know it will be back, but not often so lovely, so this one will remain special. 11AM A saleskid just came to the door, tapped... didn't ring. He was very loud talking, though, and gave me a pen "because it's National Writer's Month" and proceeded to try to... Sign in to see full entry.

White Dawn
It is blue out there, actually, just after 7 AM. It will be a proper all-around white later, when the sunlight widens out, though the sun is not likely to be seen. It's presence will be known by effect, not by direct observation. A little more snow has fallen overnight, filling in some of the dark gaps in the lilac shrubs: where branches were showing yesterday, they are all white today. There has been no breeze to stir them into that same kind of natural snowball fight that one notices... Sign in to see full entry.

This day gets whiter and whiter!
The snow is stacked along every near-horizontal surface, and the air is full of white fog. Four or five inches, stacked on the back rail and the table on the back porch, and there has been no wind to knock it out of the trees, or off the lilac bushes which look like cotton ready to pick. Every time I glance out, it seems to be snowing, but it isn't. The icy fog, though, accumulated so fast as I drove this morning, we had to stop to scrape it off again. Icicles hang from the deck overhang, and... Sign in to see full entry.
