Here's a little treat of some more garden deck views, some NZ birds, and some abstracts: context removed, some of these are tricky to identify! https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/5U0RZh Sign in to see full entry.

New photos of the hatchlings
I've reprised the whole string of dove photos from first seeing her perched on the light fixture to this morning's picture of the hatchlings, so you can see how they've grown! You can see the new feathers developing, too. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/Wmi03h Sign in to see full entry.
Morning has broken...
I've always loved that Cat Stevens song... https://duckduckgo.com/?q=youtube+morning+has+broken+cat+stevens&ia=videos&iax=1&iai=e0TInLOJuUM Last night as I went to bed, I heard the wonderful distant roll of thunder and smelled that thunderstorm aroma on the air... Rain fell for a while, clearing dust from the air and the trees and everything, the thunder rumbled once more, and there was not much but very quiet drama to lull me to sleep. The sun this Easter morning rises over the freshly dusted... Sign in to see full entry.

taking a chance
Finally, now that the big maple tree is full-flowering and its leaves are spreading open to the sun, and lilac buds are looking ready to pop any day, I waited for a moment when Mama Dove was away from the nest, and transferred the plants out to the deck for the season. I am taking a chance that we'll see no more blizzards before next fall. If she is on the nest, and I peer out at her, she peers back, and then often flies off to sit watching from the maple. Today, though, for the first time, I... Sign in to see full entry.

Another balmy day... The maple tree is going green, well along towards full leafiness, and the lilacs in the back have survived late blizzards without freezing their leaves off, nor breaking under the weight of last week's heavy wet snow. I'm not much enjoying a gout flare-up which comes, I guess, from my allopurinol running low, coinciding with a terrific deal on sliced roast beef in the grocery deli, and eating a meal of lamb stew--both high-purine content foods, and the worst for sufferers of... we interrupt San Diego to bring you...
The Hatchlings! Mama Dove wasn't sitting still on the nest this morning, so I took a look, holding the camera high... https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/809JqX Yay! Sign in to see full entry.

Market Foods report, and then some.
So... Duck eggs! I had a couple for breakfast today, and can report they don't taste much different from chicken eggs, but have a richer texture to the yolk. The sourdough pumpernickle turned out to be less sourdough, and very rye-tasting, which so concentrated is not my favorite thing. I really dislike caraway, and rye bread generally falls just on the okay side of that flavor, but this is pretty strong! The strawberry marsala jam... well! So extremely tasty! I will have to hold impulse in... Sign in to see full entry.

Going to the market
There was a spring market today downtown, and I came home with some green duck eggs, some mixed-color chicken eggs, a loaf of pumpernickle sourdough bread, an a jar of strawberry marsala jam, and some apple butter. I've been looking for 'back yard' eggs for some time now, to get away from buying the industrially produced ones. And I've been wanting to try duck eggs for a while, too. Likewise, this is the first time I've found pumpernickle sourdough in a long time! I might have to have breakfast... Sign in to see full entry.
14-18 days
That's the gestation period for the Eurasion Collared Dove egg. Since I first noticed these two eggs in the nest on my front deck around March 28, this means hatching can be expected within the next few days. It takes almost 20 days further for the chicks to be fully fledged. After that, perhaps I can have the use of my deck back again. The foot of snow day has been followed by temps rising to the 70s, with sunshine. It is window-opening time! That's this week, anyway. Next week, who knows? Sign in to see full entry.

Star Wars II: Creating Magnificence
Speaking again of the Star Wars costumes--What a stupendous accomplishment for the costumers who all had their hands in this project! John Mollo, one of the award-winning costume designers, and Ralph McQuarrie and Iain McCaig, concept designers, are not household names, though millions and more have seen their work. The name of the exhibit, properly, is subtitled, The Power of Costume. The power is in the deep Earthly roots of the designs that move us emotionally at first sight of the costuming....
