The maple looks sad, all its leaves that were so bold and bright a week ago, now limp and dark. We have had several nights of freezing temperatures, and days not much warmer, though the trend is upwards. I wonder if they'll recover or start new leaves for the summer. Since yesterday, one of the parent doves has been back on the nest, calling out pretty loudly his coocoo-coo! while the other has been sitting on the railing, and one youngster beside her. When they spot me looking, they fly off to... Sign in to see full entry.

Snow on lilacs, and the latest dove report
When the white lilacs in my back yard blossom, it is almost like snow among the green leaves. Yesterday, it was snow among the blossoms among the green leaves. Today, yesterday's winter storm residue will melt away except, maybe, on the shady side of the house, and under trees. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/JRN5Fi This morning, the doves made an appearance--parents and one of the youngsters were all I saw, in their brief fly-by. Someone blundered against the glass, I didn't see which... Sign in to see full entry.

Inshallah...
I wrote about this word recently... Inshallah... God willing... I've been hearing it a lot lately, binge-watching a Turkish production called RESURRECTION: ERTUGRUL. set in the 13th century, and focused on the nomadic hero who, historically, was the father of Osman, the father of the Ottoman Empire. Being a Turkish production, the costuming and sets are beautifully accurate--exquisite textiles and settings!--and it is the Turkish, Muslim take on the characters and the events. There is much... Goodbye, Doves!
The birds have left the deck. Whether they stay away remains to be seen. Anyone interested in seeing the whole series of photos in proper order, the album is here: https://flic.kr/s/aHskVKMjrb Sign in to see full entry.
One Dove Report
Yesterday, one of the dove younglings hit the sky and has not returned. The other left the deck, but settled in the nook between the back of the truck's hood and the windshield. When I had to go out, and when at that same moment it began to hail (!) I extracted the unwilling thing and carried it through the house to return it to the deck. It's still there this morning. The temps are back near freezing, so I checked this morning, and while it didn't much like my hand reaching out, it did hop on... Sign in to see full entry.

And the fledglings have flown!
There was one sitting on the wall of the protected area, until it spotted Embers spotting it... Embers went into a crouch, and the bird simply flew away! Charlie further reports that while I was out having my eye doc appt, and he was busy loading the truck to carry a batch of stuff to the storage this afternoon, one of the little doves was sitting on the truck's windshield the whole time, unperturbed. It will be most interesting to see if they make a habit of this place! Meanwhile, the eye doc... Sign in to see full entry.

Bird report
The nestlings are now fledglings, moving out of the nest, considering actually going to the floor where seeds are scattered among wood shavings and dry grass. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/33rw09 Here, also, is the newly occupied bird house, though I have yet to get a shot of the residents in residence. Or on residence, as there will be no spying on the interior of this nest! The parent doves have taken up station on the roof. Sign in to see full entry.

Birds birds birds and comedy
The nestlings are still a-nest, parents still attending to them, and the flicker, as it turns out, has made another fine hole beside the box Charlie made, and just this morning I noticed that a pair of sparrows have been stuffing that decorative old birdhouse you might have seen in my deck garden photos, full of grass. https://flic.kr/p/KtKYUn Here's a picture with it beside the bougainvillea, last summer. That birdhouse caught my eye at a market years ago, and has never yet had anyone move in,... Sign in to see full entry.

I did some reading about dove breeding...
From hatchling to nestling to fledgeling... The nestling phase is about to end, when these two youngsters, one way or another, exit the nest. They normally spend around 4 very vulnerable days on the ground, before taking flight. While these two won't be on the literal ground, they will be on the floor of the deck, so we've begun to prepare it for them to be safe from the winds and from predatious birds, and to also learn a thing or two about finding food on the ground. We have started setting up... Sign in to see full entry.
Birds Report
Last night, the winds came. One thing can be counted on in Colorado Springs: heavy, porch furniture-toppling gusty wind storms that last for hours and knock the heck out of an unprotected garden. As I slept unevenly through it, I repeatedly reminded myself that the nest on the light fixture is very firmly attached, and is probably more secure than one in a tree, being whipped around everywhichway. The chicks are fine this morning, they didn't blow away, I am glad to report. Yesterday afternoon,... Sign in to see full entry.
