Yesterday...

We had a full day, driving down to Olympia to have lunch with one friend who lives and works there, and another who drove up from Portland to meet up. She is the friend who is just back from teaching in China, and came home because she and her husband have a baby on the way. Before lunch, we took Elsa to the Hands On Children's Museum. So much excitement! So many things to see and to do! She ran here and there hollering, "OH! Oh! Ah! Oooh!" at each exciting thing! We hardly had time to take in a... Sign in to see full entry.

Day Two

Perfect golden weather! Temps in the 60s this morning, rising to 80 or so by evening, which is about perfect. Mother's Day menu will start with home-made Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries and maple syrup, then later, a buffet dinner with a spectacular view from the height of a local mountain. This is my daughter's second Mother's Day, her daughter is 17 months old yesterday. The back yard has a pond down at the bottom, surrounded by irises and visited by a couple of mallard ducks, and for... Sign in to see full entry.

First day

All day yesterday, Elsa was excited that she would be seeing NaiNai--Chinese for Gran--and then when she woke up and came downstairs with Mama and found me there waking up, she was suddenly all shy. But she got over that quickly enough and we had fun today. After the various errand and coffee shop stops, we drove through lush, tall greens, the trees, the hills... We went out towards Snoqualmie Falls, but the crowds were what you might expect on a fantastic Saturday, and Elsa was napping which is... Sign in to see full entry.

Old and New

Today the power cord for my big laptop died. I can do many but not all my things on the little notepad, and it is a fact that this old thing--the laptop, that is--is hopping along on its last leg. So I went out to the local computer fixit store and got the new power cord... newish, anyway. And a new old laptop. It isn't as old or as big as the one I have been tapping on for at least 5 years now. It is only about a year old, loaded with Windows 10, and has a mighty memory both on the hard drive... Just in time...

I fly away for ten days on Friday afternoon, and figured I was going to miss the white lilacs in the back yard this year. But lo! they bloom! I will cut some just where the branches need to be trimmed back and enjoy their light scent for a couple of days. In other gardening news: A few weeks ago, we loaded the bottoms of three big black plastic bags with soil, added cut up potato pieces with well-developed eyes, and layered a few inches of straw over the top. As the green leaves appear through... Sign in to see full entry.

Pretty sure winter is over...

Forecast is for 80s today, and dawn is coming ever earlier. I woke around 3 this morning, and would have been annoyed about that but for the sound of a bird--always that first one who greets the day before my eyes can see the sky getting light. I wonder if the other birds are really annoyed by that one, waking them up every darn day...? Getting laundry done, and house organized for my departure on Friday for 10 days in Seattle, checking out the new house and probably helping to unpack boxes. I... Sign in to see full entry.

Flowers and the Romanovs

Spring has finally arrived on the deck not only with broody doves, but with flowers and greenery, and dapply green shade from the big old maple as the leaves unfurl. As the sun's path slides northward, the maple won't shade the front window, and I will be hanging some sort of shade curtain over it to make the living room less of an oven come the sunny afternoons of July and August. I have been watching a Russian production--no, for once, not our current administration, but a series about... Sign in to see full entry.

Best laid plans and all that

I wrote a bunch here last night, about the new fish tank and lobster tails and stuff... then forgot to actually post it. Tired, distracted...? Numb between the ears...? I spent way too much time in Middle-earth yesterday playing Lord of the Rings Online. There was a character I had to create... When you start out on a game like lotro, you create your players, your avatars, characters, 'toons... You choose gender and race for this one--dwarf, hobbit, man, elf, high elf, beorning... Then you... Sign in to see full entry.

So far, so good...

The five comets I put in the big tank yesterday are doing fine. If this keeps up I might name them. Not that they would care... The forecast finally has no more freezing temperatures in the overnights. This means I can finally put my plants outside. Kinda like decorating the nursery, what with all the doves! I took my idea for a play/devised/improvised performance to a couple of the Elders of the local theater community. Leah, at UCCS, was one of Charlie's instructors whom I have always liked... ...and again...!

Lovely day here, temps in the mid 70s, with sunny skies... I see four days next week with lows in the 30s, so I am not putting the plants out yet. The doves are still around, and can you believe it--there is another egg in the nest! [edit a day later: make that TWO eggs!] Yup, doves can raise several families over the whole summer, laying 1-2 eggs each time. So... another month of nursery-deck! Meanwhile, the two young ones also remain in the neighborhood, spending windy and rainy times up in... Sign in to see full entry.
