Yes, the nest and the deck are vacant of the young doves as of yesterday afternoon. One was perched on the bamboo screen I put out this spring, and then, later, not. I imagine they will come back again now and then... and wonder if their prolific parents will have yet another go: Eurasian Ringneck doves have been known to raise half a dozen broods in a summer! We are having very special company today. Kathleen and Sherry Dunkle, who about two years ago sold us their Red Dragon Stage, which is... Sign in to see full entry.

Any day now, any moment...
The young doves will take to the air! They are literally on the edge of the nest, though this is in some part due to the fact that the nest is very small and they are larger by the day! By all accounts, one can only be sure of the gender of each one by observing its behavior, so I can't guess about these two. Meanwhile, the deck is greening and coloring nicely as plants are added, and dutifully watered. There will be photos... once the camera is fully charged. It was disappointing to find it... Good Kitty!
Since Our Embers has been taking her medication regularly for the past several weeks, I finally know how emaciated she was when I first brought her home. She is filling out, bigger, even fluffier these days, and is more lively than ever. Since my return from a 10-day dereliction of duty, she is very, very attentive, too. After her morning sunny patch moves on, I am the designated warm spot which is awkward for doing much else. She is cuddly and full of purr, and occupies particularly that space... and home again!
The flights home were gentler than the ones out though the plane made some very peculiar noises before taking off out of Seattle. If my car made such sounds, I would take it straight to the mechanic. But apparently the crew were not concerned with the rattlin' bangin' moanin' going on, and the flight was smooth enough. Coming into Denver after dark, off to the north there were clouds full of lightning, but the problem was not enough to divert to, say, Colorado Springs, which would have saved... The Main Event
This was why my daughter particularly wanted me here at this time, this evening. She is a member of the board of an animal shelter in the area and tonight was their big fund-raising event. She needed to be there to greet guests and encourage funds-giving, all in nice clothes and fancy shoes and all. So--while she and her husband enjoy their first evening out together, sans baby, in 17 months, it is my opportunity to put Elsa to bed. This is always an operation of 40 minutes to an hour, as she... Baby Yoga
A room full of mamas and toddlers, one teacher, and a Gran with a camera--That was this morning at the yoga class for toddlers, some not quite toddling yet. The kids may pay attention for a moment or not at all; moms shape their child's arms and legs gently, or the kids run around investigating corners of the room, and each other. Pretty laid-back class that introduces notions like movement and poses, and "ohhhhmmmm" and it begins with a little song of celebration to welcome each child by name.... Sign in to see full entry.

Forest Bathing
Living in Colorado, it's about the geology: the mountains, the red rocks, the canyons... The Pacific Northwest is about the forests. Of course there is plenty of geology in Washington State, what with volcanoes and all, but what I really miss are the rain forests, the tall firs and cedars... Today, we walked a while in a park like that, revelling in the lush green and deep shadows. I feel some part of me soaking up the green, absorbing it like a dry, dry sponge. I love the geologic spectacle... Sign in to see full entry.
Yesterday...
We had a full day, driving down to Olympia to have lunch with one friend who lives and works there, and another who drove up from Portland to meet up. She is the friend who is just back from teaching in China, and came home because she and her husband have a baby on the way. Before lunch, we took Elsa to the Hands On Children's Museum. So much excitement! So many things to see and to do! She ran here and there hollering, "OH! Oh! Ah! Oooh!" at each exciting thing! We hardly had time to take in a... Sign in to see full entry.

Day Two
Perfect golden weather! Temps in the 60s this morning, rising to 80 or so by evening, which is about perfect. Mother's Day menu will start with home-made Belgian waffles with fresh strawberries and maple syrup, then later, a buffet dinner with a spectacular view from the height of a local mountain. This is my daughter's second Mother's Day, her daughter is 17 months old yesterday. The back yard has a pond down at the bottom, surrounded by irises and visited by a couple of mallard ducks, and for... Sign in to see full entry.

First day
All day yesterday, Elsa was excited that she would be seeing NaiNai--Chinese for Gran--and then when she woke up and came downstairs with Mama and found me there waking up, she was suddenly all shy. But she got over that quickly enough and we had fun today. After the various errand and coffee shop stops, we drove through lush, tall greens, the trees, the hills... We went out towards Snoqualmie Falls, but the crowds were what you might expect on a fantastic Saturday, and Elsa was napping which is... Sign in to see full entry.
