Congrats on your upcoming trip to China!  I am in Thailand right now with my wife.  She is Thai, so she is my translator.  But I also use the phone app "Google Translate", which is amazing.  You speak an English phrase into your phone, and it puts the Thai phrase on the screen for the Thai person to read.  Thai taxi drivers use it a lot to communicate with their passengers. I am sure it works for Chinese as well.

Google Maps also works splendidly in Thailand.  It has a navigation feature that I love to use.  When we are driving somewhere, I put the destination in, and click on Directions, and it gives you the driving route on a map. If you press START, it will track your progress, and a lady's voice will tell you where to turn, in advance.  If you miss a turn, she will tell you how to get back on track. I call her the Google Lady.  You can zoom in to see what you are passing, that you cannot see from the road.  I even did this while we were in Singapore, asking for the route to our house in Thailand, and it worked!  Driving time only 22 hours, LOL.  The flight back took 2 hours.

I suspect that Google Translate and Google Maps would both serve you well in China.

Glad you have the truck back. And you sound like you have it together in prepping for the trip. That’s great and the sign of a seasoned traveler. Fun, too.

That's great the truck is back and the bill was cheap...Going to China sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Corbin Dallas,

Thanks for the name of the country I'm going to check to see if they also do New Zealand.

How exciting! China is indeed a great country - the Dragon Country. Be careful only while eating .... their variety is amazingly endless. Luck on your Chinese vocab.

Re: Re: Re: Corbin Dallas,

There are many, many sections of the Great Wall to be visited. I would like to see and take pictures of one that is not the most popular.  Meanwhile, you might join NextVayca.com, and watch for really great fares. I saw one go buy for Beijing for under $400.

I am watching for the next great deal to Australia.

I seem to remember seeing a story about a phone app that is a

language translator. I've always thought it would be exciting to see China - but Corbin's cautionary comments also crossed my mind. Good to know you're a step ahead on that one.  Safe travels!

Re: Re: Corbin Dallas,

I should have known you'd be on top of things,  but it didn't hurt to bring it up just in case.   I'm jealous,  I would love to see China and all of it ancient sites....especially the Great Wall!

Re: Corbin Dallas,

I have considered this, and believe that Charlie and I are not on the target list. We are not doing business, we have no Chinese heritage, and we are not particularly noticeable among the many many tourists from the US.

You might check on some of the articles on China keeping Americans in China,  I would definitely ask the people you go through for your papers and ask about the situations.

Most are American born Chinese,  but they have done it to Caucasians, too.

They are also holding Canadian tourists......

Not trying to scare you, but it's been in the news.....
