The doves again

They have been back several days now, in and out of the covered deck. I suspect they are, in fact, building a new nest that will better suit their needs than the old robin's nest. That one is not only rather crusty now with previous occupations, it is so small that as the chicks flourish, they end up stacked instead of side by side before they fledge and fly. This new construction, if it succeeds, will be in an outer corner where they are well-protected from hail and wind, but also not so close... Sign in to see full entry.

They're ba-aack...!

When I walked out on the deck this morning from my bedroom, to see where one of the doves was hanging out nearby, singing the rough song they sometimes sing, there was a sudden flustered flutter as the bird leaped off the nest on the porch-light box flew off. We were both startle--I knew it was around, but didn't realize it was right there! So... it looks like maybe they are considering yet another brood in the old nest. They won't find it quite as private as Embers, the plants and I are pretty... Sign in to see full entry.

Back in the saddle... sort of...

The neighbor lad is still interested in buying the truck and replacing whatever needs to be replaced... the radiator, in fact, as well as the stuff we knew about before this latest. So, with the new battery at least I could bring it home and get to the grocery store later. The other one will be ready later in the week. My friend came by this morning and took me to get my prescription. She also needed to get some pebbles from the pet store for her collection of succulents, and while looking for... Car-less

I stay home a lot anyway, but not having the choice to drive off at will is like losing electricity, internet, any major appliance... I guess it is rooted in how options are suddenly limited even if one wasn't planning to exercise them. On the other hand... I needed to pick up a prescription yesterday, put out a query on Facebook for any friend who might be willing to get me out there, about 10 miles from here. But the only responses were from people who couldn't help, but would have if they... Sign in to see full entry.

third time's a charm...

It is also the next to last AAA use I can have on this year's contract. Yes, again. Today. The old truck that wouldn't start got a tow to the shop finally, with the hope thatvehicle the battery just needed a good jump, I sent it down there. But... The battery was dead. So is half the radiator. So--no vehicle this weekend at all, not until maybe Monday when the big truck is ready. If Charlie's housemate who has wanted to buy the old one still wants it, that's good. If he doesn't, it is time to... Sign in to see full entry.

A Long Day

A few weeks ago, my sister asked if I needed a new bed. As it happens, I don't but Charlie does. She is replacing her old queen size with a twin, so today we drove up to her house in Estes Park and collected this very big mattress. Then we drove back down from the mountains along a route to miss Denver, taking hwy 72... Much up and down, and winding here and there... We made it through Golden and onto I-470 to I-25 just south of Denver. We made it to Castle Rock and after hesitating I realized I... Sign in to see full entry.

Weekend and Monday

It's golden out there in the evening... after a day of thunderclaps and little bits of hail and lots of rain, off and on. Over the weekend we spent a few hours at the Tiny House festival, checking out a variety of professional-built and DIY Tiny Houses. After trying to live a while in that RV, I can really appreciate how roomy these alternative homes can be. I found one I quite like, one built by a company called Simblissity. This is the model I liked the most:... Sign in to see full entry.

Stuffed grape leaves: the experiment continues...

Cloudy and hazy conditions today--some of that is from western US wildfires. You can't smell smoke, so probably from California and Oregon mostly. My stuffed grape leaves need more practice. The ones I made yesterday were edible and flavorful, but the leaves were too tough and the insides too dry. Since I still have a LOT of leaves, the experimentation will continue. I will work on perfecting the rice textures and the cooking times and techniques before making the ones with lamb and pine nuts... Sign in to see full entry.

Milo's Adventures

https://flic.kr/p/MBuVrS Click to the left to enjoy a morning at the dog park with Milo and friends. This was the day we met Booker, the elder Bassett Hound with definite notions of her own... The two young women attending her were a bit freaked when she crossed the creek on her own, and then, as they were ready to leave, she decided just to have a rest in the shade for about 15 minute. Booker was our favorite that day, besides Milo. Sign in to see full entry.

Afternoon adventures

So, no rain yet today, the clouds have not fulfilled their promise by almost 7pm, so we had to come up with some other excitement. After I picked up Charlie, we stopped for food and then explored new food store that opened last month next door to the bbq place. It's an Iraqi place with all sorts of interesting this and thats. I got a jar of vine leaves and some ground lamb to make proper stuffed grape leaves with rice, lamb, seasonings... Pine nuts, too, if I can find them. That was one item... Sign in to see full entry.
