Responding to comments about feral cats...

In a number of cities, feral cats are captured in traps, taken to shelters where they are checked over for health problems, neutered/spayed, and ear-clipped before being released in the area they were trapped. The ear clipping--the trimming of one ear-tip makes sure they won't be trapped again for the same purpose. Some cities, people take it on themselves to make sure their local ferals are regularly fed. Others provide sanctuary areas. Rome has such an area, a full city block of ruins with a... Sign in to see full entry.

The days after...

Well, the elections aren't over, but all is committed now, so there's that stress reduced. Got new all-weather tires on the truck, so now it can snow: I have the tread to deal with it. Got a friend coming for Thanksgiving, but that's a couple of weeks away still. The guest room is prepared, or nearly, and there is still time to do a major purge of the refridgerator. I have finally cleared vacant space on my desk, can see the surface of it now. The laundry is mostly caught up, though there is... Sign in to see full entry.

Winter comes on...

It is grey outside, with a few blue sky patches. The temperatures will be well below freezing tonight, and I have been turning on the heat at least for a while first thing in the morning. It might be the increasing cold, that we have had repeated visits from the little black cat, and a big, sturdy orange fellow. They both want in, and Embers has made her opposition to this plan thoroughly expressed. But black Onyx has not been allowed in since the incident with the 'keets--he pounced the cage a... This morning's moonshots...

I was up early this morning, according to the clock. This made it worth it: https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/M139n9 If you want to see more of the moon... https://flic.kr/s/aHsjMExojo Sign in to see full entry.

Accomplishments

We had an errand to Denver today, planned a few days ago when I won an online auction from our potter friend, Peri Charlifu. By collecting it in person, I saved $18 shipping, Charlie picked up some clay he needs for another project, and we had a visit with friends, also lunch at a recommended Chinese Restaurant. (Peri and his partner Lee know the good places to eat.) And then, we did not go straight home. We didn't plan on a thrift store visit, but there it was, a couple of blocks from the... a week in the life...

It has been a busy week since I discovered the needle-felting. It is a craft that requires a certain concentration--or else an occasional, random blood sacrifice: These needles are sharp! Since posting the previous pictures, I spent a day on another tardigrade, improving its little weird face, and I've also made a bunch more 'stealth marbles.' These are in sets of 5, each in complimentary colors. Possibly because of our early cold-snaps, the trees look bleached out this fall. A few, oaks mainly,... Sign in to see full entry.

a new project

Over the past several months I have been seeing more and more little objets d'arte made by a technique called needle-felting. I have done some felting of things I've crocheted, but had no idea how these little items were made. Well, I found out: It is called needle-felting and is done with a specially shaped needle, using unspun wool. Unspun wool is often called roving, but this wool is something different, the fibers laying in cross-directions, rather than all the same direction as is the... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday already...

It feels like winter, though the leaves have not left yet, the maple has not even gone that rich golden yellow yet. But we have had freezing nights, down in the teens, and I've had the heat on every day. Sadly, the plug on the electric fireplace suddenly blew out the other day, so that will need fixing before it's useful again. Also, sadly, Alice the Gerbil has gone over the Rainbow Bridge to rejoin her pal Crumpet... She never cared to be handled, but was friendly in her way, and not fearful of...
