Why should we celebrate Christ?

I have a few ideas of my own, feelings and beliefs about Jesus and what he said and did and taught. I know what I celebrate, and why. But nothing in these few weeks whirling from Thanksgiving to New Year's induces me to admire the message of Christianity. If I saw it from afar, from no cultural connection, I would be appalled at what appears to be a massive hypocracy, and I would never look deeper. The credibility of anything associated with it or its proponents would be totally shot. You know... Sign in to see full entry.

The Universe--locally--is looking up!

Charlie comes home from school for the holidays this weekend. I guess this means I can't be using his room for storage. Sign in to see full entry.

I've said it before, and I say it again...

merry christmachanakwaanzika! I have no problem with anyone saying Merry Christmas, and if they say it to me, I will say it back. Likewise, if someone prefers to wish me Happy Holidays, I am more than happy to be so blessed! If your joy in Kwanza is such that it spills over from your heart, I am delighted that you wish to share that joy with me! Thank you, thank you, for wishing me any kind of joy in this trying world! It's a ridiculous notion that anyone is being insulting or somehow... Sign in to see full entry.

Rethinking Entitlement at Christmas-time

This began as a comment in another blog, regarding kids who pick up guns and go on a rampage. http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Blog.aspx/oddy/507604 With both parents in a family working full time jobs in order to supply all the goods, services, privileges and toys they and their kids feel entitled to in American society--these values conditioned into the mind from infancy--a frightening number of children have to raise themselves. They don't learn the basic social contract--The Golden Rule--from... Sign in to see full entry.

Let's have a little shameless self-promotion...

Do you have a blog that you would really like readers to take a look back at? That you would like feedback on, as a long-term project, perhaps? Lately I have been appreciating some blogs here have content of the lasting sort: poetry and philosophy, political and social commentary, memoirs, how-to articles... I highly recommend strolling through the vaults of Blogit and reading some of the literature that has been stored here over the years, discovering some of the wealth that is tucked into the... Rethink Your Sense of Entitlement

Straighforward's post on domestic work and payment inspired this comment which developed into an entry here... We really need to appreciate more that anyone comes along and cleans up after everyone else. Imagine the ball park if no one did that, or a class room, or any of the bazillion places we go every day of our lives, mess up a little or a lot, drop a wrapper or cigarette butt, or don't bother to clean up after our pets... and let's not even imagine road-kills that just sit in the summer sun... A Moment of Quiet Violence

A young woman sat back in a corner, a young man leaning over the little table, intimidating her with his voice, his manner, his bigger-ness. She remained still and stiffly aware of being in public as he became less and less aware or caring of it. Or maybe he relished the notion that he was punishing her publicly, humiliating her for her transgressions against him. I have no idea what he was angry about, or if he was justified. I only saw a jerk in action, verbally beating the woman, and I saw... Sign in to see full entry.

I come blinking out of my burrow into the sunlight...There's Offy, standing

around staring at my doorway, hands on hips, and an eyebrow raised... It's about busy-ness, it's about moods, and just not sleeping enough of late, to have a clear mind and therewith things to write about... This time of year when family and household matters pile up in log-jams, I'm either very running around, or cozied up by the fireside with my head tucked under my wing, feeling a bit overwhelmed. When I sit down at the computer, it is too easy to click on my game, and go running across the... Sign in to see full entry.

Offy asked me if I am MIA again...

I have been cleaning house to make it nice for the holidays--have gotten a new stove that doesn't turn itself to broil on a whim, and a dishwasher that works--haven't had one of those in years!--and a new fold-out sleeper sofa that had to have space made for it--now all set, and pleasing the cats very much! Eye-strain is a problem lately, too--could be the diabetes, but staring at a screen definitely messes with my driving eyes and my photography eyes, too--both disturbing! Charlie is home from... Inspired by a blog on loving yourself, even if you are fat...

It is perfectly reasonable to love yourself, to know you are an excellent person, and fat, and at considerable health risk even if at the moment you still feel fine. Diabetes creeps up on you, symptoms not noticed until the disease is established and revealed by irreversible damage, like peripheral neuropathies, or loss of some degree of vision. Heart disease, sleep disorders, damaged knee and foot joints... The trouble is, for many of us, fat represents inner pain muffled; we have... Sign in to see full entry.
