What Is a Parent?

Yesterday's post about the punks pushing pot on preschoolersmade me think that this might be a good time to re-run my column about what makes a parent a parent. Argee asked a really thought-provoking question in October 2003, on a topic that is close to my heart: What is a parent? (Please go read... Sign in to see full entry.

Treating Two-Year-Olds to THC

The recent news stories of two teens who were encouraging their two- and five-year-old relatives to smoke marijuana are appalling. From what I've read and heard, here's the story. Grandma was at work. Mama was sleeping in the back part of the house. Uncle Demetrius and his friend Vanswan were... Sign in to see full entry.

More on Personal Responsibility

I originally posted this in September 2005, but my post yesterday made me think of it again. There's an appalling lack of accountability in our culture, and an appalling lack of any sense of personal responsibility for the choices that we make. I think it's a terrible problem that is really hurting... Sign in to see full entry.

Another Sad Story

Looks like the world is full of sad stories. I remember someone telling me once that everyone has a sad story to tell, and some people handle personal tragedy better than others. Today's sad story is splashed all over the internet and broadcast media. A little boy has died due to infection from a... Sign in to see full entry.

That's Just WRONG!

I have seen a horrifying story in the news (online and broadcast media) over the last few days. There is an eight-year-old boy in England who weighs 218 pounds. I'm 5 feet tall, thirtysomething, and I weigh 225. If I'm morbidly obese (and my doctor says I am) then this kid has got to be the same --... Sign in to see full entry.

Whaddaya Mean, It's Going Up?!

The cost of a postage stamp is about to rise again, to 42 cents for a first-class letter. For some reason, the postal service thinks it can stay in business if it keeps raising rates while continuing to give crummy service. I don't get it. Here's the thing. I used to send tons of letters every year;... Sign in to see full entry.

Shut Up Already!

In my not-so-humble opinion, it's time for the news media to shut up about Anna Nicole Smith. She's dead. She's mouldering, and she's not even in the grave yet. Of course, we have to decide where that grave is to be, exactly. Seems like a no-brainer to me. She bought four funeral plots in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Sad Story

I heard on the news this morning about some men who were loading a grain silo with corn when the silo collapsed, burying two of the men in about twenty feet of corn. They died, and several of their co-workers had to be hospitalized following their frantic efforts to save the buried men. We are so... Sign in to see full entry.

Is It Spring Yet?

I'm ready. It's been amazingly warm today, and we're supposed to have similar warmth for the next couple of days. I've already picked two vases full of daffodils. My hyacinths are blooming in the back yard, and the crocuses are coming up in the front. Hey, buds, it's only February. Hold your horses!... Sign in to see full entry.

I'm Doing a 5K!

There's a group of us at work who are having our own "Biggest Loser" competition. And we decided that one of the things we would like to do together is participate in a walk-a-thon for a good cause. One of our members found the WalkAmerica walk, which has the goal of raising money to help prevent... Sign in to see full entry.
