What do I do with my Blogit earnings?

I've got some ideas as to what I want to do with my Blogit earnings, as well as whatever I earn off other writing websites (and I've been put on to some others by simply doing a bit of minimal surfing around). Right now, the big "thing" is debt service. I want to reduce the amount of debt I carry, and frankly, every penny helps right now. I'm sick of being so deeply in debt to my landlord, and I'm finally up to writing a great deal for a variety of writing sites. (I just hope my family is... Sign in to see full entry.

Carbon monoxide "stuff"

In one of my entries recently, I talked about the malfunctioning carbon-monoxide detector. Someone left a comment talking about the possibility that perhaps there was a real problem with carbon monoxide in the apartment. She even mentioned some symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Over the past few days, I've been doing a bit of surfing around the net on the issue. It turns out that low-level carbon-monoxide poisoning is often mistaken for the flu, or at least the stomach flu - nausea,... Sign in to see full entry.

The dangers of being too pushy

On one of the new writing websites I've discovered, I found a link - actually, a referral, as links are discouraged on this writing site (out of fear of having writiers promote themselves too heavily, rather than providing readers with useful content) - to a site entitled Pink Truth. This is a site designed and written primarily by a former Mary Kay Cosmetics sales director, who became disillusioned with the tactics she saw being used as a part of the Mary Kay philosophy. (Yes, other women -... Sign in to see full entry.

Oh, no, not *again*

This time around, I'm having problems with our carbon monoxide detector. It's been going off, off and on, for the past 24 hours, driving us crazy for no apparent reason. This is another one of those things I don't feel I have much (of any) control over. Illinois state law changed on January 1, 2007, to require carbon monoxide detectors in all (yes, you read right - all) homes and apartments, near where people sleep. Yet another nuisance alarm going off at the most inconvenient times. What... Sign in to see full entry.

Animal rights

Over the past few days, I've been "surfing" a variety of websites relating to the subject of animal rights - both those sites set up by groups like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and those sites set up by opponents of those groups. This "surfing" binge has been prompted by a discussion which occurred over the weekend on one of my email lists. That discussion was about animal rights, as opposed to animal welfare. There is a distinct difference in these terms and the way in... Sign in to see full entry.

Observations on the pro-life movement

Last night, in between football-watching sessions (the Bears are on the way to the Super Bowl this year - gloat, gloat), I watched some of the Solemn Vigil Mass for Life, celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. This Mass is held each year on the night before the March for Life, itself held on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision handed down on January 22, 1973. (For those not up to speed on this issue, Roe v. Wade basically... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting a car

I'm a regular reader of a variety of SuccessWarrior's blogs. (You can find the link to his member profile on the side of this blog.) One of the blogs I read regularly is Walking the Millionaire's Path, in which he talks about his new plan for money management, getting out of debt, and other money-related topics. In one of the more recent entries, SuccessWarrior talks about something he overheard a coworker say, about buying an H3. This coworker planned on getting a 72-month loan in order to pay... I'm glad *that's* over!

I haven't posted in here in a while, partially due to some of the subscription-related issues Garfield mentioned in The Secret Life of Cats (in the 1/16/2007 Field Notes). I have also been a bit "off my feed." I'm currently being treated for a possible ear infection (amoxicillin three times a day for the next couple of weeks), and I go in for blood work next month. What I wanted to focus on today was the fact that my mother would have been 92 on Tuesday. Toward the end of her life - most notably... Sign in to see full entry.

If your mother says she loves you, check it out

The title comes from something supervisors at Chicago's City News Bureau used to tell cub reporters. It was a way of telling them to check out every single fact - even something as seemingly self-evident as the chemical formula for water, or (as my title suggests) whether or not your mother loves you - so that the City News Bureau could deliver accurate news reports to its client newspapers. (By the way, the City News Bureau went out of business several years ago. Newspaper circulation has... Sign in to see full entry.

Of moon rocks and departed US Presidents

Those who read the title would probably wonder what moon rocks have to do with President Ford. Here's the skinny. The National Cathedral - the nation's preeminent Episcopal church building, reminding me for all the world of the University of Chicago's Rockefeller Chapel - is replete with stained-glass windows picturing various events in what we Catholics call salvation history. One of those stained-glass windows has a moon rock embedded in it, apparently meant to symbolize God's creation.... Sign in to see full entry.
