*Not* one of my better days

I've spent a good percentage of the morning feeling "off." Part of the problem for me is that my husband essentially switched job locations effective today. Everything's up in the air - he doesn't even have a firm job description to go by. When he was originally hired, he got a detailed job description, telling him everything but what time to use the porcelain facility. He wants that kind of detail from his new supervisor, but he isn't getting it, and it's frustrating to both of us. It's also... Sign in to see full entry.

Thank you, WGN News, for proving my point

On this American Thanksgiving Day, I am watching a tape-delayed broadcast of WGN's noon news. One of their lead stories was of a house fire - and the reporter made a point of mentioning that the smoke detector did not work. The reporter unintentionally proved my point. Here in Chicagoland, those of you who disable your smoke alarms to prevent nuisance alarms would be vilified by implication. If you have a fire in your house or apartment, I can guarantee you that some reporter or other will make... Sign in to see full entry.

Sex and the single panda

In this article, found on AOL, we find out about a panda baby boom. Apparently, it's a pain in the posterior to mate giant pandas in captivity, because they have been poorly socialized in zoos. You see, pandas - like other animals - find out about appropriate sexual behavior by watching Mom and Dad mate, and there haven't been enough pandas in captivity to serve as role models of how pandas should treat each other when mating time rolls around each year. Therefore, pandas in captivity are... Sign in to see full entry.

Can everybody hear me?

Well, we're still having problems with the smoke alarm. As I mentioned in previous entries, you can't even take a hot shower without the thing going off. We are all virtually deaf from the piercing noise. Because we haven't seen anyone available to fix the smoke alarm - they've all been busy putting up the outdoor Christmas decoration, and they have apparently completely forgotten that they promised to come over soon after I talked to them recently - I have written a letter to our village's... Do we really have to have a bird on Thanksgiving?

There are actually several inspirations for this post. One of them was the Spike O'Dell radio show on WGN-AM the day before Thanksgiving. He is an amateur chef, responsible for preparing his family's Thanksgiving meal every year. Well, this year, he decided to break down and roast the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving, although it was obvious that this is not his tradition; in fact, he made it clear by implication that he was getting a little sick of hearing The Food Network's emphasis on the... Can you say "frustration," boys and girls?

As of this writing, I'm waiting on the building handymen to come over to repair the smoke detector (or at least inspect it). The manager of our building said they would be by twenty minutes after his visit (to pick up a money order for our past-due rent), However, as I write, it's been several hours since that visit, and nobody's shown up. This is a distressingly typical situation. These guys come over whenever they feel like it, expecting someone to be home to take care of things, not realizing... Sign in to see full entry.

They drive me crazy, like no one else

Goodness, I forget the name of the group that did that song - She Drives Me Crazy - but the title of this entry is from that song. It was popular during the 1980s. There are some people that just drive me up a wall. Unfortunately, for the next few days, one of those people is someone I might need to contact in the direst of emergencies. I pray that things go well for the next few days so that I don't have to do that, but I've had times in the past when I've had to contact that person, and that... Sign in to see full entry.

The secret of my success

TAPS left a comment on one of my blogs - Thanks, Dad - mentioning that according to his research, it was the longest-running blog on Blogit. Basically, he wanted to know what I called the secret of my success in the title to this entry. Unfortunately, I have none. That particular blog depends on the deaths of celebrities to drive it. I can go days without posting anything in there - for that matter, I've gone months without doing so, particularly when I've been in the hospital without computer... Sign in to see full entry.

But first, the blood work

I had blood drawn to monitor my medical condition after my transplant. Most of my blood work looks stable, with the exception of my creatinine, calcium and phosphorus levels. (For the newbies amongst us, creatinine is the breakdown product of creatine, an energy source used by muscles and found in health-food stores in supplement form - and watch the spelling! The simple addition of an extra "in" changes an energy source into a waste product.) As far as calcium and phosphorus are concerned, they... Sign in to see full entry.

About that back rent...

I got off the phone to my landlord not too long before I started this entry, and he told me approximately how much we (my husband and I) owed him after the money order we have right now is applied to our back balance. I'm grateful for all the clicks and unique page views I'm getting to this blog, because that's helping, but it's not going to be enough. I have several sources of emergency assistance in mind, and I plan on tapping those sources of emergency assistance as soon as possible. I don't... Sign in to see full entry.
