They may be cheap and easy to install...
but the last few times I had detectors installed, I was legally forced to let the landlord do the choosing. If you live in an apartment, the law is clear - building management does the picking and purchasing, using your rental fees to purchase the equipment and pay for the labor involved in installing it. Tenants don't get to choose their own smoke detectors.

Smoke alarms are cheap and easy to install-
I would do it myself...esp if I lived someplace like Chicago where people are using heaters and stoves alot more. House fires are always very sad.
