God as drug

In my last entry, I mentioned a book, When God Becomes a Drug, written by recovering alcoholic and ordained Episcopal priest Fr. Leo Booth. The book is about religious addiction, and I explained some aspects of religious addiction in that last entry. There are two aspects of that book I don't like. First of all, Fr. Booth pays lip service to the all-too-accurate fact that people can become addicted to all sorts of religious and spiritual practices (in my opinion, this includes New Age... This blogger is Dazed and Confused

This is a post that would normally go in From Death Into Life, because my observations relate directly to religion and spirituality. But, because this is in the Journal section of Blogit, I feel comfortable discussing these issues in here, too. Religion and spirituality are important topics to me, as a person, even though I have a history of switching religious labels as easily as some women change hairstyles or shades of makeup to conform to the fashions of the day. Because this is a... Sign in to see full entry.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Last week at this time, I mentioned sending off some documents to some people, whom I hoped would give me some advice as to how to help me help myself - to help me solve our chronic debt problems, and some other issues I felt were more important. The feelers I put out about these documents did not get me the response I was hoping for. In fact, I got no response at all to the feelers, which should not have surprised me, but did. In the process of writing out those documents in Microsoft Word,... Sign in to see full entry.

TIME Magazine's Person of the Year

Guess what? We all made it. We're all Time magazine's Person of the Year. That's right. If you have Internet access, and you blog, design a website, review books on places like Epinions.com or Amazon.com, or do anything else on the Internet, you are the person of the year. The article I linked to through CNN.com is right about one thing. There is a great deal out here on the Internet that makes us all weep for the future of humanity - if only because the grammar and spelling are abysmal (as if... Sign in to see full entry.

Are we all happy campers now?

I've been mulling over whether or not to post this information, and since you're reading this, that means that I've decided to go ahead and do it. I pay my Blogit subscription on an annual (rather than a monthly) basis. Because I converted from paying by credit/debit card to paying by check/money order (sent via snail mail), I'm pretty much forced to pay Blogit no more frequently than every three months. It's just easier to write out a check annually rather than every three months. Someone... Sign in to see full entry.

Moral courage

Occasionally, I visit a website called Fascinating Womanhood, named after the book written by Helen Andelin. The basic thesis of both the book, as I understand that thesis, is that men and women, beyond the obvious physical differences between the sexes, perform different functions. Those functions break down along what modern Americans might understand to be traditional functions. Men are expected to be the providers, and women do such chores as cooking, housecleaning, child care, and so forth.... Sign in to see full entry.

Good news for a change

My daughter applied for something called general assistance, available through our township (as opposed to our state public-aid department). I feel it's good news that she was turned down, as she is now able to do some writing here on Blogit and earn some money toward the family coffers. I've stated in comments, accurately, that I am a fiscal conservative. I feel that in circumstances like mine, sound financial planning can preclude the need for asking for assistance. I'm not saying that... Sign in to see full entry.

More on the "disconnect"

My current problem lies in trying to get my husband to see that this significant problem exists. He has experienced equivalent problems of his own (remind me to tell you, once I get permission, of some of those problems). When I try to point out these gender-based problems to him - that we women, particularly those of us playing a more traditional role, are pressured by implication to behave in a certain fashion - the discussion invariably degenerates into a discussion equivalent to the old... This feels just awful to me

This is something I feel frustrated about, and I'd appreciate thoughtful comments. Over the past few days, in writing some of the documents I've mentioned in earlier posts (the ones I want to email to someone), I've unintentionally reopened some old wounds. One of those old wounds could actually be called a disconnect, in a way - no, not the phone or electric company threatening to shut off service, but a very real difference between the real-life pressures which are a sore spot with me and what... Bah, humbug!

I've grown to dislike this time of year enormously. When I was a child, my mom went all-out when it came to decorating the house. We always had at least a small tree, and there were always lights, the candy cane on the door, and other Christmas touches. I became a cross between Scrooge and the Grinch when I got married. My husband's family - particularly his aunt (his mother's sister) - always handed us what amounted to a shopping list, and hated the idea of not having a Norman Rockwell-style...
