Southern Wyoming--did you know it looks like this?

Open grasslands rolling along, divided by miles upon miles of zig-zag split rail fences, and with the layers of Earth's long history revealed layer upon layer! These layers formed in ancient inland seas... but these mountains that thrust up to the west are some of the Earth's very oldest rocks... Sign in to see full entry.

Speaking of postcards...

I have a nice collection from this trip, places and critters mostly, waiting to be sent out to whoever emails me an address You might say a word about what sort of post card you would like, and I will try to accomodate! You like woods and flowers? Geology? Sunsets? First come, first served! Sign in to see full entry.

Colorado Springs: Under a Cloud

Driving in under that massive cloud, we expected rain, and we got some, but we were only under the southern edge of the storm, so it was just enough for a good windshield-cleaning, and had stopped before we arrived. Driving up the freeway is no fun, so we took a detour: a much nicer way to the... Sign in to see full entry.

Storm Clouds Over Colorado

We continued on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, called the most beautiful segment of this highway with good reason! We stopped at one of the several rest areas that have been developed to make the most of the canyon's attributes. It's called No Name, and if you are going that way, bring your bike,... Utah dawn

The day after Bryce, we made the rest of the drive across the center of Utah by I-70... I have said it before: they could sell tickets to this highway, from where it connects with Utah 15, all the way to Denver! There are several rest areas and view points looking out into vistas of the San Rafael... Sign in to see full entry.

The road home... and buying time

...passed through Wyoming's incredible geology, cutting from the area of Laramie northwest up through Yellowstone. Pictures coming, of course... when I get them loaded! Yellowstone Park is what we used to call a 'banality-free zone' which is to say, no cell phone signal, no wifi... The phone came... Sign in to see full entry.

And on to Bryce...

We discussed the extra miles, and the opportunity, and Charlie's earnest desire to get to school by Sunday... And we decided we were just too close to pass by without actually seeing Bryce Canyon. I was particularly motivated because when I was there the first time, two years ago, I had been having... Sign in to see full entry.

Great Basin National Park: Lehman Caves

Saturday morning we started in Baker, Nevada. This is a tiny artists colony just east of the Great Basin National Park. (The place with the bad espresso in a little restaurant/gallery. I mentioned it a couple of posts ago... Excellent oatmeal, and wifi...) We went on up to the Basin--so-called... Sign in to see full entry.

I promised you Crater Lake.

Here it is, the remnants of Mount Mazama, a super volcano that blew its top off about 7000 years ago, I think it was... And here it is now, a great deep caldera of blue, blue water, with a little volcanic cone, Wizard Island, in its midst. It was very chilly and windy, surrounded by alpine meadows,... After the dog sign, I owe you these two... & 'specially for Kabu and Naut!

Spotted a dozen or more of these cuties dashing about like rodent roadsters on a talus slope above Crater Lake. (Bluer than the summer blue sky! Those pictures next time...) And just when I thought the one above was the cutest ever, I caught this one: (email me if you ever want prints of any of my... Sign in to see full entry.
