BN policies

The vast majority of BN members never violate BN policy. To understand what is considered a violation, please see the Conduct Policy and the Policies page. Please let us know if there are any questions that we can answer.

An important objective of the policies is to allow everyone an equal opportunity to participate. If any part of the Conduct Policy or other policies is not clear, we welcome suggestions for improvements. Please send suggestions to us and we will review them for possible incorporation.

The violation review process

Since there are over 200,000 posts and comments on BN, we cannot monitor each one. In a typical scenario, a member reports a potential violation of BN policy. Reviewing reports is a difficult and time-consuming process, but we do our best to investigate each report as carefully as possible. We do not take action simply because of the report.

When appropriate, the relevant item is removed and a warning is issued. The most common violation is verbal abuse of another member. Please note that to protect the privacy of those who report violations, we do not publish details of violations.

If a member repeatedly violates BN policy, e.g. continues to abuse others or deliberately attempts to disrupt the site, we have no choice but to suspend their account. Naturally, we never prefer to have to suspend a member, so such a decision is never taken lightly.

After a member has been suspended, any unused portion of their subscription is refunded. In the past, we have reinstated some members following an apology. Sadly, we have found from experience that those members tend to continue their original behavior, so it is not clear that reinstatement is useful.

Specific issues

On profanity, the use of profanity is not generally a violation of policy – one exception being verbal abuse directed at other members. We welcome input on this issue.

Regarding "making fun of made up names", there is a difference between parody and activities such as harassment or verbal abuse. The former is not a violation of BN policy, but the latter is. We provide examples in the Conduct Policy, along with links to relevant resources.

On public figures, it is not a violation to call public figures names. The Conduct Policy specifically refers to other members.

Regarding publishing specifics about a violation, we will certainly consider doing so. One major challenge is that publishing specifics about a violation report may lead to certain people attacking the reporter of the violation or the target of the violation – even if the target did not report the violation. Since such actions would discourage violation reports, this is a significant concern. It is unclear whether this can be avoided.

My thought on what BN did.

If you care to read my comments they are over here:

What happened.

Ok ..... I am new here and missed the boat. I suppose I would like to know what happened, so that I don't make the same mistake myself.

Shaycom

I don't know the guy who was banned, what he did or why.  And perhaps I'm selfish, but I don't particularly care.  I hosted a board for Time Inc New Media for four years that got 1.5 million hits a month, so I understand that in running a popular board, sometimes you have to make decisions that are unpopular.

What I want to know is:

1)  Did you give him a warning first?

2)  Are you refunding the unused portion of his subscription?

3)  How long is a banning for - is this like a 3 day suspension or a permanent bar of admission?

4)  What is the process to appeal something like this?

Because these are the things that would apply to me.    Please post your answer as a post here in the community.  Thank you.

I'm a bit confused.. I take a few days off, and someone gets banned..

This place is in an uproar! I am not sure what happened to get knowles banned, and from what I have read so far, I dont know if anyone really knows or understands why he got banned. Are we deserving of some sort of explaination? Does anyone know him enough to call him or email him to find out why exactly he got banned?

When we came to BN, it was to write and to do what we enjoy best. Its so sad to see people get so caught up in controversies that we get distracted from what we came here to do in the first place. Its like any community where we are going to run into conflicts from time to time, but to allow it to get so out of control, that someone gets banned, is something I dont understand. If I write a blog and someone swears and calls me names, then, yes, they should be reported and warned by shaycom, because it is uncalled for. Its one thing to disagree, but another thing to act childish and make threats. This was done to me not too long ago, but I didnt report it, because I answered in my comment and apologized for any misunderstanding of my words and that was the end of it. If they had of persisted in name calling, then I would of reported it. I have never had to report anyone yet, and I hope the day never comes that I do. At any rate though, I truely hope that if someone does make that mistake, that shaycom at least gives them enough time to retract their statements. Its too bad that shaycom doesnt give them a suspension of two weeks or something before banning them forever with no chance of coming back. Its rather harsh. I wish they would take that into concideration so at least the person gets a second chance. Then, perhaps a trial period afterwards to determine their stay with BN. That would seem a little more fair for those who just get up on the wrong side of the bed some days and come to BN.

A Warning Maybe, But Banning dknowles, Unjustified!

The man had a sense of humor that everyone related to. He wasn't name calling out of a mean spirit, he was simply playing with people, and they knew that. I have witnessed hatred, name calling, finger pointing, political and religious wars from other bloggers that didn't even compare to how light dknowles was with his posts. I understand that you have rules, but making fun of a screen name hardly constitutes a banning. What are these sensitive writers going to do when the real critics of the world attack their fragile state of mind?

A general coment to the community

I did not write to Shaycom. I do not know the circumstances of his banning, and neither does anyone so no one knows if that desicion was to harsh or not. For all you know he messsed wih Shaycom's name in some way and pissed them off.

In any case, I think this is just making things worse because now everyone is pissed off and scared that they will be the next ones banned or something. Whatever, all I want is to not be called names.

Defending dknowles

I believe Shaycom is making a mistake in banning dknowles from Blogging Network.  He is a satirist and humorist of the first order.  I more offended by many other bloggers on BN who are race baiters and Christian haters.  Profanity abounds.  Disrespect of other people abounds.  I've never read anything dknowles has written that would have offended me if he had said directly to me.

The network lost one of its finest writers and most original thinkers.  Blogging Network is dimenished as a result.

DO YOU REALLY LISTEN TO YOUR MEMBERS?

THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE . . .
Dknowles calles someone a 'meathead' or 'Virgin_Dolt' or like name or even suggests in fun that the Word Police are 'stupid' and gets yanked of the BN . . . However it seems perfectly okay for others to use profanity called people 'M----- F------' and using every other vile word known to man and they get rewarded.  People put their opinion out in public and expect to get a reaction, what exactly is new about that.  Last time I checked we were able to call our own President a meathead or dolt or even stupid without losing our citizenship.  Somebody wrote the BN and complained and you see what happened.  Well people are now writing and saying what happened was wrong.  Will we see any action about this?

This banning was not thought out

If dk was banned for the reasons that you gave him, and I have a full copy of what you sent him, this is crazy. I have sent you an email, I have posted a blog and now this. We respect you but he did not threaten, use vulgar language and if your reviewer was upset over "word police" you are to close to the edge. You know worse things go on here. This is one time when a banning should be reviewed.

thank you
