It went well last night. As usual this guy -- A -- was there 20 minutes ahead of time, waiting. We chatted for a while about writing in general. I mentioned that I had emailed a response & he didn't seem to have seen that. So all right. Three others of our group showed up, and since we'd all been... Sign in to see full entry.

There's this guy, fairly new to the writer's group
who used to teach writing somewhere. Since he's never gonna read this, let me be brutally honest. He should stop kidding himself. First, he comes off as a patronizing, superior, voice-of-authority figure. He's the kind of hollow man the kids see through on the first day of school. You know during... Sign in to see full entry.

Politics...
No, I'm not getting into partisan critiques or reviews. Just noticed it's Primary season in Illinois and the town of Mundane. Heartfelt motivated candidates for local offices are out there talking to meetings of the League of Women Voters and the Chamber of Commerce -- anyplace they can collect a... Safe rails...
It's what one train tramp says to another instead of so long or goodbye. At least according to John Ridley in his blood & guts action novel The Drift. What a bloody, convoluted world that was! It's about a former lawyer who went on the bum after he got tired of his cushy, insulated life in L.A. and... Sign in to see full entry.

Yesterday's poem...
i used to yearn for understanding but finding none learned to do without now when someone seems to see my point and worse agrees i have to question the motive behind it as well as the soundness of the mind that dares pretend to parallel mine a warning whistle like trouble at the mill sounds in the... Only an idiot argues with an idiot...
I think that may have been on Wiley's list a day or so ago. Or maybe it was something on Corbin Dallas' blog. Anyway, it got me thinking about political debates I've had with friends. You know those long-winded things where both (or all) participants argue their side of it and nobody budges from... Sign in to see full entry.

The thing about the quake in Haiti,
it's part of an ongoing nightmare of mine. A few years back, after thinking I had finally gotten to an earthquake-proof part of the continent, I found out about the New Madrid fault line and the quake that changed the course of the Mississippi River a hundred years ago or so. An earthquake reaching... Sign in to see full entry.

Who ya gonna call?
Jean and I were talking about going to lunch. "Some place where I can get something besides beef or chicken," she said. "They treat those animals so cruel." "Who treats them that way?" "You know, the farmers." "Really?" "They keep 'em in cages, all crowded in together. And they feed them bad things... Sign in to see full entry.

Swimming naked at the Y
Jean called a couple days ago, laughing. "If you hear about some old lady being arrested for swimming naked at the Y, it will be me," she said. You can't help laughing when you get a call like that. "But what would make you want to swim nude? At least in a public pool with a bunch of seniors," I... Sign in to see full entry.

Mixed emotions...
You know that old joke about mixed emotions. Guy goes into a bar, orders a beer, raises glass in a toast, and then puts his head in his hands and groans. Old buddy next stool says what's wrong Guy? Guy says I've got mixed emotions: my mother-in-law just drove over a cliff. Bud says what's the... Sign in to see full entry.
