It's a dearth, dahling, an absolute dearth!

WHERE IS EVERYONE? You can lob all you like, send the ball smashing over the net... But if there's no one to return your serve, fogedaboudit! No one is at the Blogiteria this week. All I can hear is my own voice echoing off the walls. It seems positively deserted. There are some luscious lemon... Sign in to see full entry.

Duotrope -- site for writers

And it's free! My friend Barry recommended it to me, and I've signed on. I'll be submitting some short stories to lit mags I find there. One very interesting fact I discovered yesterday. I've been sending my stories to a magazine in Portland, OR, "Glimmer Train." Some of my best personality studies,... Sign in to see full entry.

Extreme heat, thunderstorms, torrential rains and confusion

The temp gauge in my car said 103 after I finished my shift at the library yesterday. The muggy heat does things to your thought process, or anyway to mine. I'm half-groggy, like I didn't get my eight solid last night, and the coffee doesn't seem to be clearing away the cobwebs. Speaking of... Sign in to see full entry.

My neighbors have moved on...

Swiss Family Robins have flown from Concord arbor. I guess when Bob opted out of the nest and began flitting from one spot to another, the folks took it as a cue. They were there yesterday morning, but with no breakfast for the nestlings. There were chirps, kind of like "you can do it" cheers. They... Sign in to see full entry.

Fascination...

I recently met a wonderful guy on Zoetrope site for writers, who gave me some exceptionally insightful feedback on a story I posted there. His review went scene by scene, and by the time I was done reading how smart he said my story was, I was thrilled and smiling and... well, wowed! He invited me... Sign in to see full entry.

Big Drama in Concord Nest

Bob Redbreast has flown the nest. He's got to be Bob, since he's bob-bob-bobbing around, from the deck to the first step, back to the deck, all to the extreme distress of mama and papa robin. Both parents, worms in beak, are chirping mournful worry cheeps as they pause on the garage roof before... Sign in to see full entry.

Dichotomy...

die cot o me It's a professor-y word, like epitome or synechdoche one of those we think we know the meaning of until we look it up. So to illustrate dichotomy -- Monday night I was watching "Last Comic Standing" which is a reality show that actually has a payoff for me in the occasional original... Sign in to see full entry.

TMI -- a hint of what's coming in "The Game"

TMI is the second chapter of the story that started with Indian, The Antlers diner and Juiceman, the former jazz man who runs the place. It's a wide spot in the road just off the interstate in rolling desert country. I was thinking of Arizona's wide open spaces when I started, but now the locale... Sign in to see full entry.

The natural world of my grape arbor...

A couple weeks back I mentioned that a robin couple were building a nest on the somewhat unfriendly metal crossbars of the arbor by the back deck. I wrote that I was worried about them choosing that location. I didn't see them for several days, except once in a while the cock robin would stop for a... Sign in to see full entry.

Contractors... Night and Day

I made three calls to get some work done around the house. The first was to the folks who'd built the privacy fence around the back yard, one of those with arched 8-foot sections that remind me just a bit of a fortress. One section has separated from one of the support posts, which needs to be... Sign in to see full entry.
