And then there was Ben…Part XXVII

I thought that, instead of writing about all the unimportant stuff, like Egypt (yuck) or even the latest on pre-pre-pre-historic fire-building, I should turn my attention again to what’s important – my doggie... By now Ben is really at home with us. (For those new to this series, Ben is, or was, a... Sign in to see full entry.

Did Adam and Eve cook?

I have no idea whether Adam and Eve did any cooking in the Garden of Eden, or whether they ate everything raw. If they cooked, who actually did it? Eve, as far as I know, was mostly barefoot; actually, she was sort of bare all over. ‘Barefoot and in the kitchen…?’ At least she wasn't pregnant, not... Sign in to see full entry.

Don’t do that!

Lately, when taking my doggie for his early morning walk, I notice again that many people are mistreating something that’s often near and dear to them; and while my heart doesn’t quite bleed at the sight of it, it does make me shake my head, if only figuratively. I mean, it isn’t that you’d see me... Sign in to see full entry.

Guzzling Beer – USA vs. Canada

Jimmy had an interesting post on beer consumption in a number of States, which led me to check up the figures for Canada, and I must say that I was surprised. I had always thought of our citizens as fairly heavy beer drinkers – maybe not as much as those of Britain and Germany, but certainly more so... Sign in to see full entry.

2000 Years of Binge Drinking (P. Vallely)...Part IV (Final)

(Now we're finally getting to the really good stuff, like Gin and especially Scotch...) Gin, Scotch and everything nice But wine could not withstand the onslaught of gin. The Navigation Act of 1651 dictated that European vessels were only allowed to import goods from their own nations into England.... Sign in to see full entry.

2000 Years of Binge Drinking (P. Vallely)...Part III

(In this part, Vallely begins by asking an important question. Considering the general trends in the church business, it might be a good idea for them to diversify and get back into brewing...) Could local churches today be in the brewing business? Monks brewed virtually all beer of good quality... Sign in to see full entry.

2000 Years of Binge Drinking (P. Vallely)...Part II

Here's Part II of Vallely's article, which is mostly about beer! No mention of scotch...tsk, tsk...But it does show why, in the Middle Ages, so many men decided to become monks, especially since that celibacy stuff would have to be taken with an unhealthy dose of salt... Blame the Climate (no matter... Sign in to see full entry.

2,000 Years of Binge Drinking...Part I

As I was going through my files, searching for something entirely different (and boring), I came across the following piece by Paul Vallely, the British journalist who, among other things, is well known for his travels and the examination of Western aid in Africa. This article is concerned with... Sign in to see full entry.

Back in Town…Part V

Since people’s interest in the fate of the Universe is clearly limited (unless, of course, they’re busy making preparations for its demise on Dec 21); and since even the events in the Middle East generally and in Egypt in particular don’t seem to generate more than the occasional yawn from most of... The end my not be near, but there will be an end…

As a follow-up on my post from a few days ago, suggesting that people should not necessarily be too concerned about this Mayan long-count calendar business, I have to point out that, unfortunately, in the end we won’t get away scot-free. There are a number of scenarios, none of them pleasant.... Sign in to see full entry.
