Naut
I can see where this had it's uses. Mostly it is and will always be used for one or two reasons. People use it because they enjoy it. They use it because they are addicted. It has positive uses but unfortunately the weak can become wrapped up in the most horrible situations they cannot undo this without help.

I've never seen much positive in binge drinking, though I must say a glass of fine wine adds to a great meal.

I've read that bit of history about beer being healthier than water,
but nobody drinks water till they puke, or claims some stupid thing they did was caused by it. Although I would prefer beer to dysentery... It's the binge that causes trubbles.

I wonder how Australians are going to respond when they read this.
If Northern Europe can claim cold weather for beer drinking, and Aussies claim the heat the sun for their reason....someone is wrong.
I think the Gnomes out the back in the grden shed have it right. They drink it because they made it...next year they will make more because the wild barley is here and so they again will drink it, and no i don't join them. I like my wine can't stand beer.
fo them..
for me...well I know that is a cocktail but it'l do!

I guess it's like almost anything else . . . moderation is always the key. Some years ago, I remember my parent's doctor actually recommending a glass of wine a day for each of them, wine containing various enzymes and antioxidants that are good for your blood. It may no longer be "an apple a day keeping the doctor away," but rather a small glass of port! Just wait until you read my next blog . . .

It is interesting reading about cultures' perceptions of alcohol...As for me, I am not a drinker.

Didn't tea come along a bit later Naut. As you say it was not wise to drink the unboiled water in towns, sewage facilities were non existent. Not as though *I would have wanted to drink it boiled with bits of grass mixed in as toilet tissue. Good research I am only guessing.
