Thoughts on being Jewish

This is not a political or particularly religious post – but more a travelogue of my 7 days in Israel. This trip – my 10 th as it turns out – was a first for me. It was the first time that I didn’t travel though a program or organized group. My husband Jeff and college son Ben and I were free to travel where we wanted, sleep in, see friends and family – basically making this a “recreational” rather than a “mission” trip. If anyone out there thinks that Israel's quick and effective rescue and medical response to the Haiti earthquake was an anomaly (or worse, a PR "stunt"), I'm here to tell you that that little nation has had a 50 year history offering humanitarian aid around the world. In 1959, Hadassah Hospital (located in Jerusalem) sent a group of ophthalmologists to African countries to help eradicate eye diseases and this program is still going strong. Subject: This past Monday at UC Irvine I just got this email from my cousin who was at UC Irvine last Monday: Please read and see the video below. I was at UC Irvine on Monday evening and have no words to explain just how scary and saddening the situation was. It took close to an hour before the mob left the room.
