I've just inherited my father's record collection, and the slightly archaic device on which to play them. In fact, I was thinking sadly only a couple of weeks back about how much of the music I grew up with--ethnic and folk--simply isn't played anymore, and that I could only hear, distantly, the... Fashions of the Elder Days
I remember a few of my favorite clothes from when I was around 4 or 5 years old, living with my grandparents in Northern California. I remember some cowboy boots, and a flaring tiered skift, and a particular dress I wore when we took Christmas card photos. It had a kind of German look, with lacing... Sign in to see full entry.

What could you teach...?
If schools were as unsafe for students when my kids were in public schools, as they are currently, I have would have considered keeping them home, but I have never had the temperament to home-school my kids. I still don't, but have realized that there are certain things I could teach if the... Sign in to see full entry.

For the birds
... squirrels, raccoons, and others... I know some can be problems, like raccoons in the garbage, but I enjoy their visits. I have enjoyed the skunks, the possums, and especially Madame La Darque, my little black squirrel who visited almost daily here for a year and a half. A fox came by one... Sign in to see full entry.

What do you miss most?
Nostalgia is such a powerful emotion. The past where we grew up, where we lived with our parents and learned about life, takes on a kind of psychic patina that is meaningful to us, even fuels a kind of yearning. I feel that way abou t some of the cleaning products my mom used that I can no longer... Sign in to see full entry.

Hubris
The Tower of Babel... Icarus... The Titanic... The story and myth, the history of human hubris. Has there ever been a time when human beings, full of admiration for our own cleverness, our own achievement, have not taken on the gods--the Divine however imagined and understood--and competed for... The neighborhood
Used to be so many active bloggers, so many lively conversations! What happened? I know I don't write lately as much as I used to. I read but don't always comment, often meaning to come back again later to comment after I've had more time to consider what I want to say, or am in a more garrulous... Sign in to see full entry.

Questions and Answers
My Dad was a scientist, and this was one of his lessons in scientific method: Ask the question you want the answer to. He wanted me to apply this lesson to all questions, and to the next thing which is also a lawyering thing: Answer the question you have been asked. It is amazing how little most of...
