Sunday in the house with Embers
Here it is, another quiet Sunday morning... Embers is settling down on my chest, but I can see most of the keys on my laptop which occupies my lap which occupies, with the rest of me, the comfy chair. A clock is ticking as it does, and across the room, the 'fire'place is running the little fan that blows warmth into the room. The fish tank with its remaining 3 large comet goldfish makes gentle babbling brook sounds. Charlie has been in Seattle getting to know his dad's new roommate, a big black... another goodbye...
I heard a sound night before last, but was busy and distracted and didn't go check it out. It was my oldest, biggest, loveliest goldfish, the white one with the long tail, leaping out of the tank and hitting the floor. I found her there in the morning. Now she has gone wherever small creature's spirits go, and her body has gone to nurture the spring planting, whenever that happens. Embers, on the other hand, is actually doing better again. She perked up after a steroid shot at the vet a week or... Sign in to see full entry.

Relatively quiet...
Sometimes it's good to keep the tv on, even if I'm not watching the show, don't care that much about it. It's a background of human noise. Sometimes, I love the quiet, glad to keep the tv and radio silenced. That's a good time for environmental recordings of water, of distant storm, of birds, of crickets and frogs... When the power goes out, that's a special kind of quiet. Only the battery-driven clocks tick onwards, and sounds from outside get in. It's the feeling that something is about to... Hello, Orion! Goodbye, Turkey!
Orion was brilliant in the sky last night. After so many nights recently of cloud-filled skies, this made me smile: Orion is an old friend! When I was 6, and for a few years after, Orion hung in the winter sky outside my window, beside my bed, silent and steadfast. A few times when I was older, in the ages of freedom from parental clocks, I saw him in summer skies, having stayed up well past any proper bed time! Yesterday was the first day of Turkey Soup. I simmered half the turkey carcass... Sign in to see full entry.

Inspired by Pat's post about her grandmother...
I met my first Seventh Day Adventists when I was 17, at a service station in a town called Desert Center, between Phoenix and Los Angeles. My dad was hauling the trailer with a not-quite sufficient station-wagon, and had to make the pit stop for new tires right then and there. So, this older woman with crow-black hair and an Arkansas accent started telling me about how wonderful Heaven would be, where the streets and everything are paved with gems, and she would have skin soft as a baby's! I did... Sign in to see full entry.

Best-laid plans, and all...
Snow crept in silently overnight, ~ 7 inches of it now on the back porch rail. There is the same in Bailey where we were planning to go for Thanksgiving, but still falling up there in the mountains. Driving highways and back streets to get there is not gonna happen! The truck has good all-weather tires, but not actually snow-tires not studded tires, and it hasn't got 4-wheel drive. So--no. We had advance notice of this storm, though, and got our grocery shopping done yesterday. Other than the... Sign in to see full entry.

odds and ends weekend
Rambled through the day... The snow that was 6 inches deep on the porch rail is all gone, though it will take longer for it to fully melt away over the next couple of days of high temps in the 50s. It was interesting yesterday and especially in the evening to hear vehicles crunch slowly past the house. The city does nothing about snow on our street, it isn't a main enough thoroughfare to warrant their attention. So, I sat here watching a movie on Netflix, and playing solitaire, and writing a... Sleepy Thursday
It's bleak outside, a grey day with bits of white in the air and settled on cold surfaces. After another night of interrupted and uncomfortable sleeping, I am less than enthusiastic to start the day, and here it is 40 minutes before noon. Not yawn-sleepy, just... disconnected from the day. Maybe some of it is conflict-fatigue, just weary of watching the Republicans packing courts all around the country, weary of comments of seriously ignorant people who fancy themselves experts on the... Adventures of the Mind
A group of local actors have started up a fantasy role-play improv group... They have been practicing for a month or so, and put on their first public show this past weekend. Charlie, of course, is part of it. https://flic.kr/p/2hNqZvc Here are a few photos from the show. For those who don't know how Live Action Role Play works, it's all about the dice. Players roll to determine who starts a combat, for instance--rolling for Initiative. They roll for outcomes: Odge swings his axe -- attacker... Sign in to see full entry.
