Pirate Fest 2019 Part One

Here are a few shots from yesterday. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/60u1nd There will be more... This has been an easier trip than previous years as Charlie and Vale have done the setup without need of my bits of advice and suggestion, so I have been free to relax during the heavy lifting times. We are putting more emphasis this year on donations for the Compass Rose stage, with a table of various 'premiums' to thank donors. My station is behind that table. I did some walk-about... Northglenn Pirates, look out!

And here we are at the Northglenn Pirate Fest. Charlie and Vale are setting up the stage and the crowd-covering canopy. I am at the hotel which has some peculiar qualities. This is the place where last year the bed in my room was so high off the ground, I had to get the step-stool from the truck to get into it. On our way out I was told to ask next time for a handicap room. Well, I am qualified to do that, and did, and this year the bed is about knee-high from the floor, no ladders or... At home Tuesday

Tuesday soup from Sunday chicken... Or was that Saturday? In any case, today, it's soup. Yesterday it was boiling the remains, and today I added a few odds and ends--beets and eggplant that baked with the chicken, a can of water chestnuts, some onion... garlic and ginger... It wasn't yet right. So... some lime juice, dried parsely, fresh celery... Still nope. Okay, a can of coconut milk and some tamarind sauce that has been in the fridge a while... And there was a bottle of Indian red curry... Sign in to see full entry.

The Hanging Gardens

I have always, since first hearing of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, loved the idea of hanging gardens. I love cascading greenery, I love jungley-looking habitats and uncommon plants. In my new-up photos, here they are... https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/hU353D I am especially happy with my bathroom hanging garden. It is lovely to look at, and it also cleans the air. With the catbox just below, that means something! Come the days of frost, my outdoor garden will have to find spaces to... Sign in to see full entry.

Naming the Moon

Woke at 6 this morning... The full moon--mostly full, still--is high over the Front Range in a lightly clouded sky. What is it with hanging names on full moons these days? So, this one is Harvest Moon because it's September. And it's a Micro Moon because it is as far away from Earth as its orbit takes it, just as Super Moon is when it's closest. One is a traditional naming from generations and centuries of humans as harvesters, the others--Well, in an astronomer's family, I never heard it called... Sign in to see full entry.

One of Summer's final days...

I am roasting a chicken today, because it has been languishing in the freezer long enough, and the day is cool enough to have the oven on that long. It takes a long time because I roast it from frozen, at a low temperature. It will be wonderfully tender and juicy this way, though at some point in the early stages, once it is thawed enough, I will have to retrieve the giblets packet from the inside. There are some fresh beets, a couple of long Chinese eggplants, some sweet onions and some carrots... Sign in to see full entry.

Gentle Friday the 13th

It has been a kindly day, neither extra heating nor cooling required, and sunny all day. If you looked at my flickr photos in the past week or so, you'll have seen the baby spiderling plants that I clipped off my sister's prolific mother plant on my latest visit. I put their dry-looking bottoms in a dish of water, and waited... Some days later, white roots had appeared, and I separated them into individual little spice-jars of water. Today, several of them have shifted to larger homes, and their... Sign in to see full entry.

Looking to the East

The Duolingo Chinese lessons are progressing. I find I am good with numbers, great with matters relating to food and basic greetings, but not so much with introductions and advanced greetings. It eaches, all at the same time, the sounds and tonalities, and the characters for each item. This makes my brain stretch, and is probably very good for it: I am probably delaying the onset of dementia by several months! I have been watching a Japanese docu-drama about the Tensho Boys' Embassy. This was an... Sign in to see full entry.

Mole-eyes

Some nights I dread going to bed, hate the whole 'trying to go to sleep' thing--even when I don't have to be up by a certain time. And of course, as soon as one starts to think about it, bang! game on! It was one of those, last night. So this is another day dealing with whatever it brings, with only a few hours of sleep. Still, no more doves on the deck. I have begun working with the Duolingo language learning thing. I have been learning Chinese, and also because I have been watching some... Not cool

I don't think I needed a flat tire today. But if I did, I needed to have it in front of the house. Which it is. And I needed to have 1 more AAA service before renewing--next week, which I do. And I needed not to have to be anywhere right away, which I don't. Also, I needed someone to drive by while I was trying to figure out why the truck was driving weird, and tell me I had a flat. And she did. All in all, the lucky outweighs the unlucky today. But geeze... Kabu goes away and everything goes to... Sign in to see full entry.
