unexpected and astonishing.
There is a story-- Many years ago, 1970 or thereabouts, my father, Dr Kenneth Franklin, who was an astronomer, played with an idea: that if we meant to colonize the Moon--this was during the Apollo program--we would need to have a different way to determine time there: the clocks and systems of the Earth would be unsuitable for the Moon. So he invented a time system for the Moon. The Helbros watch company took this idea, and made the watch for it. Neiman Marcus, the Texas store that puts out a... Sign in to see full entry.

Did you ever..
write a letter, and send it off sure that it said what you meant, and how you felt, conveyed a certain tone... Then glanced next day at the copy you kept, and realize... There's no way this will be taken as intended... What you thought was light and friendly, thoughtful, casual, interesting... will be received as something much less nice. I fear I have become in someone's eyes not merely spam, but whiny bitchy spam. It's a comedown... once, I was a friend, playfellow, interesting chat; I was... Sign in to see full entry.

Okay, here's one...
Before her business visa came through, Marika did a lot of volunteering and participated with the Wellington Kennel Club. She signed up her own dog for an agility class. Cooper is a Lancashire Heeler... a small but tough little dog with an obvious touch of Corgi, but much smaller, and colored like a black and tan doberman. He has the mind of a big dog, and if he were working according to his heritage, he would be herding cattle. So he is smart and energetic and cooperative at will. His will. At... My daughter and her dogs
She has volunteered at the Wellington SPCA and another up the west coast, I don't recall its name--since she arrived in New Zealand 2 years ago. She trains dogs and people, so that dogs are more adoptable and people, more adaptable to their new companion's needs and nature. Last summer her business visa came through, and she opened her own training business. Visit here here: http://www.dancingdogs.co.nz/ On her rather spiffy website you can learn all about anything I could tell you... Wait, let... Sign in to see full entry.

I have a confession...
I watched Real Housewives today. I have watched it other days. New York, New Jersey, Hollywood, Orange County... even some of Atlanta. I'd like to say I watch as an exercise in anthropology, I do have that degree after all, observing the subculture of privilege... Or that I watch as a writer, studying grotesqueries of character... Or as a psychologist, plumbing the dubious depths of shallowness... And still, I have to admit that some of the fascination is to watch bitches play out their games,... Sign in to see full entry.

Its a foot-up day...
not for reasons of laziness or r'n'r. No, it's a gout flare up that demands this treatment. So... these shots were taken this morning, of my kitty that likes to keep close, and what cat doesn't love a spot of sunlight...? http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/sets/72157626876353812/ Sign in to see full entry.

Some years ago, I went to a party...
the Middle-earth Ball was an event some years ago in Seattle, a weekend thing, and I of course went both nights, and anticipated that it would be an annual event, but sadly, never heard another word about it. Immense enthusiasm and energy went into it as you will see in these photos. I suppose there was, finally, no money. http://www.flickr.com/photos/therovingeye/sets/72157626738898539/ Sign in to see full entry.
Dad
My dad was greatly respected in his professional life, his adult friendships. He was friends with some renowned people. But to his family he was a great disappointment. I have been going through some deep feelings lately regarding his failure as a father and husband, his inability to understand the significance of feelings, especially those of others. Particularly, mine. All my life, all my life's most important choices were twisted by the fact that he was a man who didn't know what to do with... Sign in to see full entry.
