Village Elders

We may not know everything the kids know... but we know stuff they have not yet discovered, have not imagined, and can't remember because they weren't there. We know why we say, Dial a phone number, and who Gene Autry was, and we have watched the amazing films and wonderful actors many of the youngsters will never see because those films are not in color. We know how to write in cursive, how to write a letter, in cursive. We know how to count back change. We were there to see the first space... Sign in to see full entry.

Checking in...

Cool and cloudy today, like yesterday, as summer fades and the heat it baked into the land dissipates... I haven't been reading much lately: too much close screen-time messes with my vision for things like driving. Lately, I have had to be driving, too, going around hunting costume materials. The costuming for CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is going well, with most of the cast already having stopped by at least once to check out what's here and determine what's still needed. There will be some sewing to... Sign in to see full entry.

Moon is up!

On flickr, that is. Start here https://flic.kr/p/yfy9xS and click left to see my moon shots, starting with the funny/special effects/ didn't use a tripod ones, then getting on to the few that worked somewhat better. My cameras and skills are not up to the really fine images some people get, but I saved you the better ones. I drove over to Garden of the Gods for the moonrise, and watched the first of the eclipse there, but there were too many people, too many cars, and clouds were moving over the... Me to Little Kid Next Door: I have a mouse in my house! LK: Are you going to catch it? Me: Maybe. Would you? LK: Yep. Me: What would you do with it if you caught it? LK: I'd eat it. Little boy, 6 or 7, I think. Strange child... At 4, I remember one day in the hay barn chasing a mouse from the loft down into the soft pile of hay below... I felt something in my little cowboy boot and when Grandpa pulled it off my little foot, the mouse ran out! I was so mad, I had caught it, and it still got away!... Sign in to see full entry.

Costuming Adventures

For the next 6 weeks or so, while the actors rehearse and the stage manager sorts out the staging, PR sets up posters and press releases and... whatever else she can do to publicise the production... I am busy sorting and shopping and fiddling and meeting with actors to get them all appropriately costumed for CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. This production will be set in the late 1880s, pretty close to the era of the book, so the costuming is particularly fun and challenging. With a limited budget for... Sign in to see full entry.

Charlie's next great adventure begins!

copied from Charlie's announcement on facebook: War is coming. Not a war of nations, or a war of families, or kingdoms, or gangs... but a war... OF THE WORLDS! That is to say, the good folks at Theatre 'd Art have accepted my proposal for a devised adaptation of Orson Welles radio adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. My first full size public devised performance, and I couldn't have hoped for a better show or a more awesome group of people to help me bring the story to the stage. So know... Confirmed: I have a mouse in my house.

I thought it might be so, seeing a shadow dash across my peripheral vision a couple of times in the wrong place for it to be Spot or Fluffy, my two persistant floaters. Just as I was about to come up with a third pet name, Charlie saw it, too. And last night, I got a clear look as it dashed a bit slower than usual, and there was an unmistakeable, undeniable tail. It seems to have come in from the deck, underwhich is, no doubt, a rich supply of bird seed as well as pretty secure shelter from... Sign in to see full entry.

Thar she blows...!

Autumn is blowing in on wings of wind! Still a few days from the equinox, but strong and chilly breezes have swept this landscape for a couple of days, off and on. I needed an extra blanket on my bed last night. I love autumn... something is unbearably, irresistably poignant about it, with the fading of summer passion, and the not so very distant onset of bleak, sleepy winter... The turning leaves are the year's last Hurrah! in all their brilliance, to feed the color-hunger in us through the... Sign in to see full entry.

Yesterday and today... Doing Stuff

Yesterday was a busy and productive one, compared to the ones where I never manage to tear myself away from the computer for longer than it takes to make a meal or answer Nature's other calls. All the plants got watered from the nutrient-rich water out of the fish tank that got cleaned. A new betta joined the household, a little red fella in a cylindrical tank. No photos yet, but there will be, I'm sure. The old betta who has air bladder problems and usually swims on his side also got a bigger... Sign in to see full entry.

Be fruitflies, and multiply!

It was not good. It was better after I put up three new fly paper strips. That'll larn me not to forget to take out the garbage before a trip! Also multiplied: the morning glories! Photos are up in the usual place, next to the Window Seat shots of the return trip. They are a lovely welcome home present, much nicer than hordes of fruit flies. Eyes are settling in, getting used to working together. It will be some days more before I trust their cooperation for driving. Now... I need some coffee...... Sign in to see full entry.
