Medical report

Without the rant regarding bad, bad, bad directions and getting to the appointment way late... with a nod of appreciation for the people who work for Kaiser Permanente, all of whom bent over in many directions to get me seen yesterday anyway, I am able to report that the injury to my ACL seems to have settled itself, and is, in fact, a condition created by osteo-arthritis which I have to some degree in both knees. The doctor said he could find no actual problem now with tendons or ligaments, but... Sign in to see full entry.

Upheavals in Gerbil-land

There has been so much kicking-around of the household litter that I decided to have a cleaning day. It started with the over-abundance of shredded grass and cardboard, then involved some furniture removal, some re-balancing of one thing and another... Alice and Crumpet seem quite excited, I hope happily, doing much running about, shifting of litter and dashing up and down and around... pausing to peer around, have a wash behind the ears, then whirl off again. There are photos of the new... Sign in to see full entry.

Not exactly a quiet day...

It started calmly enough, with sunny skies encouraging me to go out and clean up the back porch, sweeping away the couple of seasons' worth of leaf and dirt litter. Some seeds planted a few weeks back have sprouted and the snow peas might actually survive to make snow peas this year! The keets got a new swinging perch, big enough for two... It was installed through the top hatch without any flyabout incidents. I spent the early afternoon with files of financial stuff, pleased to discover that... Sign in to see full entry.

Fly-about

It started out a quiet day, warm and sunny outside, so I opened a couple of doors and windows to let it in. Then, while doing about of housekeeping about the keets' house, our Matilda took a chance and was suddenly flying around the house! I flew around closing doors and windows! It was sweet how Bonzer hollered after her, and how she flew here and there, but kept coming back to sit on the cage. The cage has several doors, including a roof opening. I opened that one part way as it looked like... Sign in to see full entry.

The other spring

Today we have the spring of 40s temps, F, and rain and possibly thunderstormings. The thunderstorms are a sign of spring moving towards summer. The not-snowing means winter has finally given in. But we did get some considerable hail yesterday--I had to suddenly cover or bring inside precious new sprouts and my zonal geranium hanging baskets. Other parts of the Springs had a lot more hail than my back porch where some bits were bigger than 1/4 inch across. All the rain, though, is great for the... Sign in to see full entry.

The poem I promised over among the prompts...

At CCT's suggestion, I am copying it over to this blog. When I am a ghost Freed of body hungers and gravity and time… I will stay to tread and swim and fly Where in life I could gaze only, deaf and blind, With my inadequate human heart And boundaried human mind. I will soar on wings of dream Over vasty desert dunes Great swathes etched and shaped Undulating long and slow And traveling by wind As gradual as time can flow… I will measure mountain crags Weaving through among between And playing... Spring winds

Every year I have planted sugar snap peas or snow peas to grow vining up the string trellis at the end of the deck. Every year they have gotten high enough to reach over the pots, and have been defeated by the dry winds that come gusting through this area, beating things down and drying them out. Well, I have got a nice little crop of peas growing again, but this year I am paying attention to those winds, and shifting the little seedlings across the deck to a more protected corner. They don't... Sign in to see full entry.

Right now... Lucky me!

Live broadcast of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony! With the volume turned way up! There is not a bar of this music that doesn't move and delight me! And the Ninth Symphony was my very first classical concert, back in 1970. Twice in one week, with good seats, because my date loved classical music and had season tickets--then bought two more for this performance. Sign in to see full entry.

How many bubbles is a drink?

Watching Crumpet taking a drink from the water tube... It is a test-tube, basically, with a cork in it. There is a curved glass pipe that extends through a hole in the cork to connect the water supply to the gerbil's eager mouth. The gerbil licks at the opening of the pipe and laps out the water. Every so often, a bubble of air rises through the pipe, as air is exchanged for water. It occurred to me that Crumpet 'pays' for his drink with that bubble. Silly thought maybe... it's that kind of a... Sign in to see full entry.

lilacs and stuff

There are lilacs, white ones, along the fence line between my back yard and Charlie's. They are blooming now as they do every spring, but this is the first spring in several years that I've been here to enjoy them. They have a sweet, light scent, and the flower clusters are not as lush as many I've seen, but there are lots of them! In the two previous years I have also missed the sudden transforming of the maple tree off the west end of the deck from bare branches to misty green to a wall of... Sign in to see full entry.
