...and so it goes...

I'm waiting for a check to arrive in the mail which already seems a little late, and the mail truck swings by at 4:30 in the afternoon and leaves one piece of mail for the house behind us and a 'returned to sender' that was first sent out to my Mom in May 2013: the Mother's Day card she never got. I'm a little concerned about the check. Sign in to see full entry.

Let's see... recipes from the weekend...

We had a lovely Thai-ish soup made with a box of veg stock, with a can of coconut milk, juice of a juicy lime, some fresh basil, a dash of garlic powder and some turmeric. I added snow peas, shredded carrots, shitake and white mushrooms, asparagus, little pearl onions. At the end, I tossed in some chicken shu-mai. We made prawn and chorizo tacos using fresh corn tortillas heated up on a hot skillet. My quick-guacamole (mash avocado together with salsa from a jar) and cabbage were in mine. She... ...and back again!

It took 4 hours to drive from the Springs to Estes Park on Saturday, and 5 to get back today. Saturday, traffic through Denver and Boulder was slow. Today, I swung west of most of Boulder and all of Denver, taking Hwy 93 through Golden to meet up with I-470. And then there was blizzard. Last week it was a choice between getting the brakes fixed, or replacing the heater core in the truck. Great braking, but a cold, cold ride home with no defrost, so windows just a little open, and occasional... Sign in to see full entry.

Off I go again...

Not far, not long, and all by road... Truck is happy with repaired brakes, weather is sunny and will be mild, weekend bag is packed, and groceries are in the fridge in a bag. I'm driving up to Estes Park to cook for my sister. I never knew she really doesn't enjoy cooking because she does it so well, but there it is: She told me a few weeks back, when I shared a recipe, "You can come and cook for me any time!" nder I love to cook for people who like to eat! So--the weekend's menu is all worked... Sign in to see full entry.

Reversi

Besides coping with going from 'nearly' sighted to far-sighted, reversing all my long-standing visual behaviors, now, suddenly, after a morning of snow flurries that didn't stick, the wind has kicked up and seems to be trying to blow the fallen leaves back up into the trees, where they also are not sticking. A discussion began today with Roy, the props/set designer and theater instructor, and friend who suddenly has to find new digs for his workshop. Charlie also needs his own workshop, and I... ...continuing flight...

It was no surprise that connections were departed or cancelled when we arrived at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. Because I had gate-checked my carryon, I escaped relatively quickly (for sitting in the rear of the plane) but the line for the ticket agent was already longish, maybe 10 ahead of me, and only one agent. Only one? What were they thinking? 1 in the morning, and very tired travellers, and a need for efficiency... I didn't see the second agent arrive, or know she was there as she was... Home again!

Finally...! The getting of the ticket was perhaps an omen. For one thing, the layover went from several hours in Phoenix to about an hour in Dallas/Fort Worth. The flight wasn't unpleasant: while I had been assigned the center seat, the window seat guy didn't mind in the least switching, so I got the window after all, looking out the east side of the southeast-bound flight. Very cloudy skies all down through California, though I think I got a glimpse of Shasta Lake--extremely low!--and Mount... Sign in to see full entry.

Missions Accomplished

Well. The eyes are fixed, and in a month or will be all healed, and then it will be time to get some prescription glasses for close work:taking pictures, reading and writing and doing computer work. Until then, it's muddling along with magnifier glasses which... muddle along. The second mission was to clear out some of the stored old household stuff which currently takes up two (one large, one small) storage units near the old house. Originally, I'd intended to rent a Uhaul truck, but with one... Sign in to see full entry.

Yesterday...

Charlie is spending the weekend at a state park south of Olympia where his ole buddies are creating another Live Action Role Play fantasy weekend. But before we dropped him off there, he and I had a lovely and longer-than-expected walk through the campus of The Evergreen State College. We used to go there for other LARPs and for TESC's Super Saturday which was one of the best community festivals ever until it lost its original spirit and turned into just another sales/shopping opp for vendors... Eyes can see (almost) clearly now...

Surgery was yesterday, patch came off today, and there are certain auto-habits I have to be changing. I will no longer be able to adjust my vision by pushing on the bridge of my nose. Wearing magnifiers to see close up, I will now be looking over my glasses to see far rather than near. It will be useful to remember I no longer have protective eye-shields when eating grapefruit. While Fluffy seems to have gone, and Spot visits only now and then, and is somewhat smaller than before, I now have a... Sign in to see full entry.
