I sat in on the rehearsal this evening while the lights were being set up for the show. They did only parts of the show to get the lighting sorted out, but what I saw was really impressive. In such a small theater, it isn't easy to really get that visceral response to staged emotions, but even in a foreshortened rehearsal, they did it! The set is an apartment which is actually three apartments, and we watch as the people in them go about their lives, until the radio changes everything... As a... Sign in to see full entry.

Summer Deck Garden
Here are some photos of the deck garden and visiting birds, with a particular one for our Kabu, and another for our bird-house building Wiley. The one for Kabu will be obvious, though when I impulsively acquired the artificial tree I didn't realize it was inhabited. It was inhabited again last night by, I suspect, a cicada that made its music for some time before I was overcome with curiosity and went peering in among the leaves. After that--silence! Too bad... I liked having my own personal... Sign in to see full entry.

The DressUp Box opens...
Hopefully, after the initial start-up, it will be a faily low-maintenance thing. Once the goods are displayed, Willowstone handles the sales, collecting payment and sales tax, for instance, which I am quite glad not to have to deal with. They will send me a check every two weeks. If a customer wants to dicker, then Willowstone calls me with their proposal, or any other questions that come up. The DressUp Box is what I'm calling my 10x10 stall at Willowstone, a huge warehouse that is part auction... Sign in to see full entry.

Corn Roast Report
Got corn? I do. I have corn. Quite a bit of corn. As it turned out, only the War of the Worlds cast showed up, and though I sent home half a dozen whole ears, there's still a bag of half-ears in the freezer, and another 7 or 8 whole ears in the fridge. There were leftovers of all the butters, too, which were very well received, if not polished off. One of the cast is Joanne, a woman of 41 with whom I predict a happy friendship. She really enjoyed the eclectic weirdness of the stuff around my... Sign in to see full entry.

It's coming out in a moment...
Today is the Great Corn Roast! The timer will go off in about 5 minutes and I will turn the oven off, and start pulling out the 36 tasty ears, strip 'em down, and cut them in halves, and fill the bowl with them. Then I will fill four other bowls with melted butters: garlic, spicy, maple, and plain ol' butter. Just in case we need it, there's a new (very basic and cheap) bbq grill to take out of the box and assemble because someone wanted to bring hot dogs. If he does bring them, I will point him... milestone!
I believe, going by comments, that I have CCT to thank for the 14,900th click on this blog. *deep bow with a wide sweep of the big feathered hat* Thank you, CCT! Alice or perhaps Crumpet decided to eliminate their overhead lighting by chewing the tiny cord that connected it from the ceiling of their house to the transformer to the plug in the outlets bar to the outlet in the wall. I can't object, I also dislike overhead direct lighting. Sign in to see full entry.
No poisons here...
Kabu wrote today about her garden and her neighbor, the garden spider who is one means of keeping down insects of more damaging kinds. I have spiders here and there in corners that I leave alone because they cut down the mosquito and fly populations. Now and then, I clear the evidence of their effectiveness, and they have to make new webs. We have hornets, too. Not bees: I would rather see bees! The hornets hover around the shingles on the roof, crawl in and out all day. I would hate to be the... Sign in to see full entry.

Chiff Chaf reminded me...
...in his blog about cakes and icing. When my father's father was courting my father's mother, he came to the farmhouse for a family dinner made entirely by the young lady, to demonstrate her cooking skills, really. The dinner was quite acceptible, apparently, until the end. Dessert was a cake with a boiled icing. Two things can go wrong with a boiled icing: if it isn't cooked long enough, it is too liquid and runs off the cake. If it is cooked too long, it cools like cement. Hers was the... Idyllic day...
with temperatures moderate all day, and a nice downpour in the afternoon to wash the dust away. This is several cool days in a row, and it feels mighty nice! I was just about to sit down and watch some streaming of the Olympics, when the radio began to pour out Beethoven's Pastorale, and I have to listen! Such grand, heart-lifting sounds! Speaking of heart-lifting, Adnohr and I conversed a bit on Facebook, and I made a decision. Now, instead of sharing all the absurdities and outrages of the... Sign in to see full entry.
Just a few new pictures
My hands were full most of the day, and it just wasn't a photo taking day... so, these two... of the same thing. And then, last night's clouds gathering at sunset to give the area a fantastic light-show last night... Warnings on the radio for flash-flooding across three counties... We are safe enough, the nearby creek being well down in a valley of its own, it would have to rise 20 feet to get to the top, higher still to get our feet wet at home. But in the mountains, and on many roads the water... Sign in to see full entry.
