The wind is up today!

Big, fat gusty winds, slamming loose doors around, upsetting the trash cans, nudging vehicles suddenly this way or that... This usually is a new weather pattern blowing in, in this case, rather warm for the season. I worry for the lilac buds opening in the back yard even now. Charlie is working Tech Monday for 12 hours, preparing for the one-man show: SATCHMO AT THE WALDORF. The show and actor are both critically acclaimed. It opens Thursday. The performer is John Douglas Thompson, an actor of... Sign in to see full entry.

Is it Spring?

It's a bit worrisome to see spring coming on in February when there are at least 2 or even 3 more months of possible severe cold. From now through next week, at least, temperatures are in predicted in the 60sF, and by the end of next week, buds will be opening out, and another hard frost will do them no good. Crumpet has her wheel back, as I was aware now and then through the night, having forgotten to remove it from the tank before going to bed. Charlie has completed his Quetzalquatalus...... Fishy business

I wasn't here the past couple of days because I decided to use my Superbowl day to watch the entirety of ROME, a really excellent production broadcast by HBO several years ago. I got through the first 15 episodes on Sunday, then the final 10 yesterday. At an hour each, that pretty much filled my time. Today has been Catching Up day for household stuff. This involve some furniture shifting, shelves unloaded and reloaded. Really heavy furniture doesn't like to move over carpet even the 2 inches I... Sign in to see full entry.

More Voolishness...

This one is more horselike, with carved features like beak, hoofs and claws. If that doesn't arouse your curiosity, I should mention it has wings, as well. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/52ew6G Sign in to see full entry.

The Mountain in the morning

When I got up this morning and glanced out towards our snow-covered Pike's Peak, it was glowing a brilliant rosy pink! By the time I'd re-organized the sheer curtains out of the way, and settled on the couch with a clear view, it was dim, a rose-touched grey. And when I looked up again a few minutes later, the sun and eastern clouds had re-organized themselves, and the mountain was light with Maxfield Parrish gold! Now, a couple of hours later, it is whitest white, with the blue, grey, and white... Sign in to see full entry.

Quiet Gerbil Thursday

When I got up around 8--late for me!--Alice and Crumpet were quite busy, but I am thinking that they were heading for sleep late rather than waking early, because since around 9 or 10am, and it is now just past noon, they have been cuddled up asleep. As CCT points out in a comment yesterday, pets can be bored, and it's our job as their keepers to provide what animal-keeper professionals call enrichment. This is true of all animals as can be witnessed in apes and cats and elephants and others of... Sign in to see full entry.

The day is grey...

Wednesday Gerbil Report: Much busyness today, with a new box replacing what was left of the previous; both Alice and Crumpet did a little household exploration in the gerbil-ball. Alice doesn't have the muscle or mass to move it about nearly as much as our Crumpet. Crumpet, today, rolled about 6 or 7 feet across the room over to where I was standing, where Alice sometimes is stuck just digging madly at the plastic wall. They don't stay in the ball for long--I don't want them to get bored or... Sign in to see full entry.

Snuesday Diary

The snow stopped before mid morning, and the back porch remained at 18 inches. With some occasional gustiness of wind, there is still snow in the air, but much is off of trees and roofs. I heard one of the next door lads out shoveling the porch and steps--mine, as well as theirs. I thanked him with a big mug of very fine hot cocoa. We have a bag of sand, so I distributed that on the porch and steps he'd cleared, because ice is always nasty. Charlie broke his tailbone, we are pretty sure, sitting... Sign in to see full entry.

Monday Weather Diary

Snow is coming down in big soft flakes now, the kind you get when the temperature is right around freezing. Yesterday we got 4-5 inches, and now, about twice that, and it's expected to continue through tomorrow. It will be cold all week, after last week's balmy days that got nearly up to 70F. Glad I don't have to go anywhere! a few hou rs later... T hrough my layered sheer curtains over the front window I can see the snow still coming, but now it has wind to liven things up. I measured by... Sign in to see full entry.

Sunday with Gerbils

The Ladies are having a busy day shifting and chewing and dashing around Checking Up on Things. Crumpet gave the gerbil-ball a whirl last night, and found it... well, I don't know, but she didn't seem to mind it, and was quickly learning how to not get stuck in corners, of which there are many in this room. We have several inches of snow today, which was supposed to be Movie Day here, the afternoon spent watching MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and HENRY V. Well, I can watch them on my own or with the...
