Got him!

Despite schedules and timings, we did, in fact, pick up my step-grandson from the airport last night, and he is officially into the first day of his adventure, passing from childhood and parental supervision into this transition to Real Life. He is not quite yet 18, so that makes his Uncle Charlie and me his 'in loco parentes.' Loco certainly applies...! The conservative view is that he is here for a couple of months, but I think he will work at making it permanent: get a job, make new friends,... Sign in to see full entry.

Someone is living in my flower pot

It's a window box, about 2 feet long, maybe 8 inches deep and across, and out of the corner of my eye the other day, I saw a little brown shape scoot by... Closer examination revealed a little burrow in the center of the box. A vole, maybe? Too big for a mouse, I think. Whoever it is has a ready supply of birdseed both from the feeder and from the plants that grew under the feeder and are now going to seed. If you enjoyed the Murphy clip yesterday, here's another...... Sign in to see full entry.

Fame and glory, kid--Fame and glory!

This is what got Charlie his listing in the IMDB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RRA4ichJtU It's actually better than I expected it to be, and it is clearly set up for a sequel or series! Sign in to see full entry.

In and out again...

The DMV opens at 8am. I was there at 8:30, and out by 9, mission accomplished. Interesting warning: When you apply the tabs to the license plate, score the tab several times with a razor blade. This makes it difficult for tab thieves to peel it off. I didn't realize tab thieves were a thing. There is a cafeteria at the El Paso County Services building that is part of making a trip there. It's operated by chefs-in-training from a jobs program, and they offer quite good menus, breakfast and lunch,... Sign in to see full entry.

Revisions and Updatings

Several years ago, I offered an Item for sale here: LAYS OF MIDDLE-EARTH--the first part of my collection of Middle-earth and Tolkien-inspired poems. Today I went over that Item, neatened it up and lowered the price by $2. I've posted individual poems from that collection from time to time, but had not looked at the Item for a while. This first part includes poems about the Creation and First Age of Middle-earth, the truly mythic part of Tolkien's grand project. None of this was spoken of... Sign in to see full entry.

Wildfire haze at sunset

https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/WXawKj Apparently, several fires are burning southwest of Colorado Springs, besides the Fort Carson fire. Setting sun filters through the haze and clouds for a few dramatic shots. Sign in to see full entry.

Smoke in the skies of Colorado--again!

After hiding from the heat downstairs most of the afternoon, I glanced out a window and saw that peculiar orangey cast to the air and the afternoon light... There is a fire burning in the forest near Nederland, west of Boulder. But this is from a much less dangerous fire burning southeast of Colorado Springs, at Fort Carson. Apparently it was started by soldiers in training exercises, and is relatively small, already contained, and never threatened any structures. Sure does make a lot of smoke,... Sunday morning cool and bright...

Fading fast, the chill of the night. Birds are chirping outside and in, The cars on the highway, a distant din... Charlie has a ride to the Ren Fest this morning, and a ride home again after, so I can sit here comfy in my jammies and think about what to put together for Second Breakfast. First Breakfast when I first get up is a low-carb snack to keep the blood sugar more or less stable. Second is the proper breakfast around 3-4 hours later, that sets me up for the day, and is when I take my... Sign in to see full entry.

For CCT

...who hung lanterns in a tree in today's poem, and reminded me of these lanterns in this other tree. The form is called a pantoum, by the way, and was originally designed to be sung by minstrels. This is one of two I wrote a few years back on the theme of Bilbo Baggins' eleventy-first birthday at the start of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. SHADOW OF THE FUTURE The lanterns they glow with a comforting light as they hang in the boughs gently swinging illuminating the gathering night and the company,... Sign in to see full entry.

Between storms and clouds...

I forgot to mention earlier, I saw a 'ratcoon' ambling through the neighborhood last night. I made that little trilly sound that they make, and it also made the sound though I can't swear it was an answer. I know my accent isn't quite right. And today on the net that holds the thistle-seed that the goldfinches like so much, there were three birds: two bright yellow and black and one slightly duller version: I think the season's kids are growing up! Today I finally made the red sugar syrup and... Sign in to see full entry.
