Just when everything was going so well...

First, the sudden return of winter changed our route southwards. Second, the trailer has lost a wheel bearing which took us a while to realize, and while it could have been better, it could have been worse. We had just pulled off the highway into a little town called Scipio, Utah, and saw white smoke at the back. That was the tire rubbing against the bottom of the trailer. Immediately around the corner there is a little auto fixit place, one-man show, and he says he can get the parts MAYBE by... Sign in to see full entry.

Just what we hoped to avoid...

Winter storm has hit the very route we had deemed the safest for the travels: snow, a little, and ice, somewhat. And wind over the prairies. We are in Evanston, Wyoming at 9 am, waiting a little. I-80 doesn't seem to get the same kind of traffic as some of the other east/west interstates, so I will give it a bit more time to effectively dry out the road. Temps are right around freezing, not really cold-cold, so that will help. I've got excellent all-weather tires, but not chains which are... Sign in to see full entry.

Moving on...

Turning our noses towards home this morning, after an exceptionally fine weekend in OlyWA. Not just because of the classic NW grey drizzle, but because of the company and some truly memorable eating experiences! Amanda, a good friend and former housemate from the Springs now lives in Oly, and we met up with her for a lunch at one of those places we always go to when in town: an actually good Chinese and sushi buffet. After lunch we walked at Tumwater Falls Park, another almost-always visit. That... Sign in to see full entry.

Internet connection achieved!

We have made it to Olympia, WA through minor adventures like forgetting to check the gas when we left the motel this morning, and after getting on the interstate, seeing the Last Drop Light come on... We made it gingerly to the next station 7 miles up the road, and put 33.6 gallons of gas into our 34 gallon tank. Then, because of the orientation of the pumps and the size of the lot, ended up with someone volunteering to help back up the rig. I haven't got the hang of it yet, of steering so as... Oh my... Oh dear...

Well, I've done it now... The Rambling Rose is mine, and I am learning how to drive with a small house dragging behind me. I am pleased and excited and very anxious about the driving. One might say, a bit terrified. But every day from here on, I'll be getting more used to it and familiar with the strange way the brakes work, accustomed to the unaccustomed height (10 feet) and weight (1200 lbs empty). Getting in the habit of driving slowly and carefully will come easily. The previous owners, two... Sign in to see full entry.

Weekend Shenanigans

This past weekend was Starfest in Denver, a large and renowned science fiction convention that has, among other activities, an art show/auction to which Charlie wanted to add his Vools and other creations. And I wanted to find the fine ceramics of Peri Charlifu. If you google the name, you can not only see his Agean Goods site, you will also get to see some photos of this charming hobbity fellow! I've collected a few pieces of his work each time I find him at a show. This weekend I bid on three... Sign in to see full entry.

Now, here's a thing...

A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to see a film of the stage production of WARHORSE. I wrote about it here, as I recall, it was so wonderful, magical and moving. The puppetry is astonishing: the kind of Victorian mechanical 'steampunk' puppet/horse itself, and the way it is handled by the several puppeteers. Found this today... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1q9TXcng7o Warning: this Youtube video leads to others... I hope you have nothing else to do this morning! Sign in to see full entry.

The bird is back

The northern flicker who pounded and pecked a nesting hole in the wall outside my closet last year is at it again. Again, I stick my head over the deck railing and tell him, firmly, "Go away," and usually he does. Though today he just stared at me until I waved my arm at him. It's all in the timing. Last year I was about to leave for several weeks, and knew he'd have his nest hole before I got back, unbothered by firm words and flailings. And now, again, though about two months earlier (such a... Sign in to see full entry.

Getting ready...

In a few minutes, it will be time to drive the new old truck to get a new dash mat installed--I do hate the reflection of the dash in the windshield when driving sunwards! It is also getting a box installed that will have the duty of controlling the brakes of the trailer, a very useful thing for downhill stretches along which you don't want the trailer traveling faster than the truck, or actually, any occasion when you apply brakes at all. Crumpet and Alice were up and busy when the rising... Sign in to see full entry.

The New Gerbilhouse

Yesterday, Alice and Crumpet moved into new digs--an appropriate term for gerbils' houses. This morning the sun shone in through the east-facing glass door and illuminated the new habitat and the girls woke up to continue exploring and adjusting the furnishings. Adjusting, of course, is done mostly with teeth, but gravity also sometimes takes a hand. https://www.flickr.com/gp/therovingeye/ynW170 Sign in to see full entry.
