Finishing the festive Stilton

We've about come to the end of the festive food. Tonight we'll be finishing the Stilton cheese. I'm a big fan of Stilton so this is a sad night. When I was younger I thought the cheese would never end. But when you're younger you don't realise that the future holds more than just the success you... Sign in to see full entry.

The weather forecast was wrong this morning, which was a shame because they have been doing really well lately. On New Year’s Eve they were within ten minutes in predicting the time of the rain in central London. This was so impressive as to be scary. But this morning the forecast of a bright start... The sandwiches are made and I am ending the day on a note of optimism, looking forward to a trip to the coast. If it's a bad day we'll go to Skegness, if it's a good day we'll go to Scarborough. I bet that has a few of you globetrotters scratching your heads hasn't it. How can anyone be excited by a... Sign in to see full entry.

I've just had a look at vfree's comment on my last post and see that, like the UK, Australia is having pleasant weather at the moment. It's a reminder that it isn't just the time zone that differs - I suspect our idea of a pleasant afternoon differs too. Without knowing too much about Australian... Sign in to see full entry.

Three hours into 2006 and its still 31st December

Sorry, I couldn't resist it. The complete weirdness of writing a blog which will be sort of printed before it is written is just so attractive. It's three hours into 2006 where I'm sitting but this entry will be dated 31st December 2005 when it appears. Whether this a comment on globalisation, world... Sign in to see full entry.

Days of the dead

This is my fourth journal entry and I'm already getting introspective. Today I thought of the dead. In between Christmas and New Year I usually do. It's the right time of year for doing it, gloomy and with time on my hands. Do women do it too or is it just men? My wife tends to remember the dates of... Sign in to see full entry.

What is an eyot?

As mentioned yesterday, I intend using the end of the last entry to spawn new writing. So, what is an eyot? For one thing it is a word I have only ever been able to use in crossword puzzles or Scrabble until today. Also written as ait, an eyot is a small island in a river. And the point of this is... Now it's raining

No this isn't a clever metaphor for my life, this is an English journal and water is falling from the sky. I say water but from the fact that the snow is still hanging round on the ground I imagine that it is only a degree or two from freezing.. It's all a question of what you are used to. If you... The day of the turkey

It's 8.00 pm Thursday 29.12.05 as I write. By the time the miracle of the world wide web has taken over the time will be considerably different and the date will at least be in a different order even if it isn't changed. This is the in-between time. Christmas is over and we went shopping to buy a... Sign in to see full entry.
