A walk round Southwell - dead men, a King and a poet

If your first reaction was "where?" I can't say I blame you. It isn't a very big place, a big village rather than a small town, but it has a butcher that sells quail's eggs, a bookshop and a Minster, amongst other things. This is the headquarters of the Bishop of Southwell, which by historical... Sign in to see full entry.

Rufford on Saturday

Sorry about the delay - tide and taxman wait for no man. Here is another instalment of photographs, from Rufford Abbey. I don't like going on Saturdays; the photo of the crowd on the bridge shows why. I missed it but the angry swan attacked a dog after we had walked past. There was a yelp but by the... Rufford Abbey

A couple of days ago I went to Rufford Abbey, which is 3 or 4 miles closer to home than Sherwood Forest. The day wasn't too bad so I took a few photographs. Thomas Paine - pillar of the state.

I have just been reading a post by malcolm in which he mentions Thetford and its links with Thomas Paine. I've been to Thetford a number of times, more specifically to Thetford Chase, the woodlands around it, and don't remember seeing the statue. It did, however, remind me of the Lincolnshire town... "The Buddha is smiling". Twisted musings from an underworked mind.

What sort of twisted mind uses the name of Buddha as a code word to indicate the successful completion of a nuclear test explosion? Ask the Indian Government, they used it to indicate the successful conclusion of their first nuclear teat in 1974. Not only has Buddha always seemed a peaceful sort of... Sign in to see full entry.

William Marwood drops in and a new blog is started

I've been worrying about a good start for this blog, then I realised it doesn't matter - tomorrow this will be the end not the beginning. OK, a quick word about Marwood, the ultimate English hobbyist and a man who ended up being able to take his place in history as a result. For years, working as a... Sign in to see full entry.
