Morning sky over mountains

On January 3, the day we were to set back to Delhi from the mountain home, I woke up at 6 AM and peeked through the bedroom curtains. The sky had some spectacular cloud formation and I knew I needed to capture it. I quickly put on my several layers of clothing for the day, grabbed my camera and went... Sign in to see full entry.

Birthday Surprise

Earlier this week, my friend Usha's sister called to ask if I would come to a surprise birthday lunch they were organising for her 40th birthday. Oh yes, I said. Yesterday was the lunch. I debated on a gift and decided on a book. I wrapped in very colourful paper (40s are a colourful decade) and... Sign in to see full entry.

A New Schedule

A new year, the first month and a deadly schedule. I have signed up to develop a 12 segment curricula for telecentre operators and managers. It would be OK but I have a wicked deadline -February 15 - and its a lot of work, believe me. So, I decided the best way to get it done is to just do it. And,... Sign in to see full entry.

Slate and Stone

I took these photos - of stone and slate - in my sister's house in the mountains. This material is available locally. The stones are from the bed of the spring at the bottom of their property. It has been used liberalyy and mixed with slate which has been used for the roof of the house, for walls... Sign in to see full entry.

Goats Galore

I like goats. I've always liked goats. I like their size, their demeanour and their movement. They are the correct size, have a cool temperament and don't take up much space. Goat milk is supposed to be good for us (not that I drink it). Mahatma Gandhi drank it. And goat cheese - that I adore goat... Sign in to see full entry.

Capturing the Cala Lily

I love Cala lilies. In my sister's home in the mountains there are two Cala lilies. Everyday, when I am there, I go up to them, talk to them and stroke them. The white of the flower amazes me. The eaves - green almost black -serve a sharp contrast to the white of the flowers. The day before we were... Sign in to see full entry.

Kindness

I have this saying- in my little book I note sayings in - which I would like to share with you all on today, the first day of 2009. "Be kinder than necessary for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle." Every now and then, as I sit at my desk in Delhi, I open the notebook and read from it... Sign in to see full entry.

The Anniversay Gift

Last year my sister Saroj and her husband Jasbir had their 41st anniversary, in the end of September. I decided to go in search of a gift. I like shopping for and selecting gifts, especially for those I love and whose taste matches mine. What should we get them, is the eternal discussion my husband... Sign in to see full entry.

Breading in the mountains

Every time we come to the mountain home, there is talk of making bread. A little over a year ago, when we were here, the talk of making bread started. Jasbir had a beautiful bread book and all of us leafed through it a great deal. It had beautiful photos and we had visions of turning out the best... Sign in to see full entry.

A year end treat

I am in the mountains of the state of Uttarakhand, in northern India. It's a lovely and special way to the end 2008 and ring in 2009. After driving 14 hours on Thursday (Christmas day) we reached Shyamkhet, where my sister Saroj and her husband Jasbir have built their home, in the year 2000. It... Sign in to see full entry.
