What non-hunters don't know about the unsung heroes, hunters!

Last evening, I tried checking for comments on my latest composition and the computer announced that it was operating in “safe mode.” I said to myself, “What the bleep did I do now?” or something very like that. I couldn’t log on or open anything. It was safe, all right. Safe and of NO use to me! I couldn’t fix a problem if I had no idea what caused it to occur. Aside from being a modern day equivalent of magic, alchemy, and confounding technology, it has a little known hidden purpose. It was... Sign in to see full entry.

The "Human condition," and my thoughts and questions.

Whoever wrote the “Roaming Gnome” commercials, has done some very amusing work, up ‘til now. I’ve had some hearty chuckles from watching them. I just saw what I suspect is one of the first airings of a new one called, “Cliff diving in Mexico.” I laughed for almost a full minute and the more I re-ran it in my head, the funnier it was! If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat! I sometimes wonder if most of us have at least one brilliant idea, during our lifetime and some of us have,... Sign in to see full entry.

A public service announcement from Guy. Ignore at your own risk!

If I’m running a bit late, I often have to eat my lunch on the fly, so to speak, while running my meals-on-wheels route. This is done by steering with my left knee while driving, and eating and drinking my milk with my hands. This comes so naturally to me that I’ve frightened a few passengers by lapsing into this driving habit while not at work and not eating. Corners are something of a challenge and I’m not one to press my luck, too often, so I risk spilling my beverage and take the wheel back... Sign in to see full entry.

A pleasant walk in the woods, on a fine Autumn day.

Baby finally got bored waiting for me to finally get finished doing whatever it is I do, up in that damned tree. He doesn’t really enjoy our game of “Drop heavy things, and see if Baby gets squashed, or runs,” anymore, either. Each time something falls out of the tree, he moves his resting and watching spot a little farther away from the fall-out zone. He still enjoys playing our “Drop stuff on Baby” game in his sleep, because I hear that familiar “Yike!” and watch him dash for safety, laying on... Sign in to see full entry.

It's time for me to rant about political suicide!

If you had to choose between being a Republican senator, governor or representative, up for re-election, (!) or whoever will be held responsible for the debacle in Myanmar, which would you choose? Which could be WORSE? According to some sources close to the president, he is preoccupied, (to put it mildly) with how history will view his presidency. Too bad that he can’t ask Nixon. Bush now has a lower approval rating than Nixon had, just before his resignation. Congress has the lowest approval... Sign in to see full entry.

It's ALWAYS later than we think! Cherish those important to you.

As I stumbled out of the bedroom, half-asleep, this morning I was awakened instantaneously. I heard the TV say, “Karen is weakening significantly and is expected to be gone tomorrow!” What a relief to find out that the newscaster was speaking about a tropical storm. Without my being aware of it, I was still worrying about my boss, Karen Pitlak’s medical emergency. Normally, I think of humorous slants to put on scary stuff because it takes away a bit of our fear. Things like, “What is this? A... Sign in to see full entry.

Secrets of hunting camp. Swear to keep this stuff to yourself!

There is one thing that I hate about this time of year. Each week, when Marilyn looks in the classified ads, there are fewer and fewer yard sales listed. Lately, as she counts the dwindling number of sales, her hands begin to shake and the back section of the paper she’s holding, quivers so badly, I don’t know how she can read it. So far, she’s bearing up bravely, but I know that when the last yard sale of the year is just a memory, she will begin sobbing inconsolably. A man can’t bear listening... Sign in to see full entry.

My boss saved her own life, Sunday night! Seriously scary stuff!

A co-worker called me last night and informed me my boss at the Arenac County Council on Aging, is in the hospital, recovering from an emergency artery stent procedure. He told me that she drove herself to the hospital and this sounds typical of her. When a problem comes up, she tackles it personally and tenaciously. When one thinks that they are experiencing heart problems, I’m not sure that this is the best idea but I can picture myself doing the same thing. My friend Roy said that she expects... Sammy Davis Jr. Gone but never forgotten!

Has there ever been a more talented performer than Sammy Davis Jr.? At the age of four, (I think) he was a paid, professional dancer with his family’s dance troupe in the days of vaudeville. Before his death, he became world renowned for his accomplishments as an outstandingly talented actor, singer, dancer, lover of beautiful women, husband, loyal friend, a member of the “Rat Pack,” a patriot who entertained our troops in Viet Nam, at his own insistence, spokesman for his race and reason, and... How I protect my sanity in an insane world.

When I returned home from work yesterday at about 2:00PM, Marilyn’s son Donnie was about to leave for work. His ride to work pulled into his driveway, next door to us and I recognized the driver to be a neighbor and former co-worker, Charlie. Although I knew better, I called to him and said, “Hey Charlie! Are you just getting home from work, too?” He replied, “No, I’m just going in.” I told him that I was exhausted and needed to rest up for several hours. He asked me, why? I told him, how each...
