Categories

Thank you for your feedback on the new Blogit categories. Based on your input, we are changing the name of one of the existing categories (now renamed Arts & Photography) and adding two new categories:

  • Single Life
  • Members' Games (this category is meant to include all quizzes, puzzles, games etc. that Blogit members have created for other members to participate in).

With 18 new categories in place, you may wish to move your blog to a more relevant category or change your blog's name via your blog editing page (as explained in the Blogit Help section on this topic).

You may reach your blog editing page by first clicking on the "Write" link in the navigation bar, and then clicking "Edit" next to the name of the blog.

Once there, please click on the relevant link that allows you to change the name, description, or category as well as adjust display settings such as the number of entries on each of your blog pages or the length of excerpts shown to nonsubscribers.

Thank you.

Blogit improvements and changes

The holidays came early on Blogit. Based on your requests, and in an effort to improve the user experience for Blogit members, we have made the following changes besides the new toolbar:
  • We have added 16 new categories based on Blogit members' suggestions (for a total of 39!) -- for you to fill with your writing prowess.
  • To encourage browsing of all blogs and categories, the Browse page now focuses on a list of Blogit categories rather than the blogs in one category.
  • The term "post" has been changed to "blog entry" (shortened to "entry" where appropriate).
  • Sorting of blogs within a category now uses a drop-down menu instead of links.
  • The default presentation of blogs on Category pages is now sorted by the Last Entry Time to highlight the freshest content. You may still sort blogs by popularity and name.
  • In addition, you can now sort blogs on each Category page in both alphabetical and reverse alphabetical order.
  • The Search tab for "posts" is now called "blogs".
Thank you.

New toolbar now default for all users

Based on your input, the new toolbar is now ready for all Blogit users. Thank you very much for your feedback during the beta testing period.

The new toolbar is now the default for all editing pages (blog entries, comments, and About Me pages). Please note that this toolbar may be slower to load the first time you use it but it should load quickly on subsequent use. The toolbar provides many of the features requested by members over the last year:

  • Spell check.
  • Word count.
  • Find and replace.
  • Paste as plain text, or paste from Word without problems (no need to paste into Notepad first to remove special formatting).
  • Use any color you like for your text or the text background, not just a limited selection
  • Insert special symbols easily (for example, the copyright symbol ©).
  • Add text as subscript and superscript, or strikethrough texb text you want to change but not delete.
  • Powerful table editing.
  • Larger, more colorful emoticons  as well as the small emoticons from the old toolbar.
  • No "signed-out" frustration -- you may now post what you've typed even if you were away from the computer for a long time and are no longer signed in (as long as you re-enter your Blogit password).
  • More fonts which match the choices in the easy template editor in Blogit Silver and Gold
  • Better security for readers -- browser "scripts" are automatically removed, so copying and pasting excerpts from other web sites is safer.
  • Works with the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari (although some features may not be available on all browsers).
  • When using a browser that doesn't support the new toolbar, paragraph breaks and links are saved properly.
  •
The new toolbar is available to all Blogit users although some features in the future may only be available to Blogit Silver or Gold subscribers.

    Thank you.

New version of toolbar now available.

Thank you very much for all your feedback and bug reports on the new toolbar which many of you have been beta testing. We have used your input to modify and improve the toolbar as can be seen in the latest version available here.

Since many Blogit members have switched to the new toolbar already, we're planning to make it the standard so we would very much appreciate any final feedback and issues.

Please note that the toolbar may be slower to load the first time you use it but it should load quickly on subsequent use. Here is a list of improvements and fixes in the latest version:

  • No "signed-out" frustration -- you may now post what you've typed even if you were away from the computer for a long time and are no longer signed in (after re-entering your Blogit password)
  • Loads more quickly, especially when editing an existing post
  • More emoticons -- the small emoticons from the old toolbar have been added
  • More fonts -- now matches the choices in the easy template editor in Blogit Silver/Gold
  • Better security for readers -- browser "scripts" are automatically removed, so copying and pasting excerpts from other web sites is safer
  • When using a browser that doesn't support the new toolbar, paragraph breaks and links are now saved properly
  • Minor bug fixes (e.g. the emoticons toolbar icon is now consistent)
  • For a complete list of features available thru this new toolbar -- such as word count, spelling check etc. -- please see our original post here.

    Thank you.

Try out the new toolbar (with spell check, word count, and more!)

We would like to invite you to test the new toolbar that is being considered for Blogit. It works for both Windows and Mac OS users, and provides access to some great new features requested by Blogit members:

  • Spell check
  • Word count
  • Find and replace
  • Paste as plain text, or paste from Word without problems (no need to paste into Notepad first to remove special formatting)
  • Works with many more web browsers, including the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari (some features may not be available on all browsers)
  • Use any color you like for your text or the text background, not just a limited selection
  • Insert special symbols easily (for example, the copyright symbol ©)
  • Add text as subscript and superscript, or strikethrough texb text you want to change but not delete
  • Powerful table editing
  • Larger, more colorful emoticons
  •
If you would like to test this toolbar and provide feedback, please go to the beta test page located here: http://www.blogit.com/Blogs/Accounts/BetaTest.aspx

Please note that although the new toolbar will be available to all subscribers when testing is complete, some features in the final version may only be available to Blogit Silver or Gold subscribers.

Please also note that this toolbar takes a few seconds longer to show up on your Write page and that the beta test does not allow you to use this toolbar for comments at this time. If you are on the comments page (adding or deleting a comment, for instance), you will only see the old interface. Once the beta test is over, the new toolbar will be available for writing/editing both posts and comments.

    Thank you.

    Blogit reaches 1,000,000 in comments!

Earlier today at 8:44 AM PST, Blogit reached the one million mark in comments as it nears 300,000 blog posts/entries on tens of thousands of blogs written by thousands of Blogit writers. Go Blogit!

The 1,000,000th comment in Blogit's history can be found here and was posted by Passionflower who has been a member since October 14, 2003.

While the first 500,000 comments on Blogit took over 26 months, the second 500,000 comments took less than 10 months!

Thank you all in making Blogit a vibrant community. Here's to the next million comments!

    Category name change

Due to recurring confusion about what is appropriate to write in this category, Romance & Sex is being renamed Relationships.

Please post adult-only content, that is not appropriate for a general audience, in the Mature Audiences category located under Everything Else.

As stated in the Blogit Conduct Policy, laws on this issue vary greatly by location. Rather than simply prohibit such content, the Mature Audiences category was created for this purpose.

    Thank you.

    "View new comments" section expanded

As requested by several Blogit members, the “View new comments” link located on the “Write” page now shows up to four pages of comments (that is, up to 100 recent comments) rather than only one page with 25 recent comments.

The “View new comments” link available via the “Write” page allows Blogit members to track the comments left on their blogs.

    Thank you

The Philadelphia Inquirer Book Editor on Blogit and blogging

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Book Review Editor, Frank Wilson wrote about Blogit yesterday along with some thoughtful commentary on the reading/writing trends in this country and how publishing will be impacted by blogs.

What is interesting about Blogit is that it is a community of writers and readers. In fact, it is precisely the relationship between reader and writer that blogging can bring about that makes blogging worthwhile.

Check it out and let him know what you think. There's a great discussion taking place in his comments section. I'm sure he would like to hear what Blogit members have to say.
