Channeling Cassandra

Back in February, when I got the mail-in ballot for the presidential primary in Ohio, I voted for Ron Paul, because I was disgusted with the federal government's fiscal messes, which the Democrats in Congress were ignoring so they could use it as an issue in the fall, and which George II had... Inverted Reflections

When you look at your image in a spoon, what you see isn't really what you look like. You're upside down and backward, and the proportions are all wrong. But you can make out the important parts, if you look closely enough. You can see where that bit of chocolate is on you cheek well enough to lick... Sign in to see full entry.

Apocalypse Not Now

Courtesy of Hurricane Ike, my family has just had the chance to visit the distant past, and live the lifestyle of our ancestors. Sort of. We lost power Sunday afternoon, and lived without it until Wednesday night (in time to watch 'Bones'). The power outage was widespread, so schools and many... Sign in to see full entry.

Weakness in Numbers

I am an avid reader, and I try to take time to read a range of points of view on any issue that interests me. In my younger days, I read the Bible and the Book of Mormon a lot. More recently, I've read books by aggressively anti-religion atheists like Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. I... Sign in to see full entry.

The End of the Endless

I never understood the point of Hell. Okay, I exaggerate a bit; Hell is used to scare people into conforming. But the idea that an All-powerful Being, the one responsible for the existence of all these fallible humans, would put people into a place to make them suffer forever; well if offends my... A Bug's Life

The first car I bought, or rather we bought because my wife, Liz, and I bought it together when we were engaged, was a VW Beetle, 1964 model. It was mostly a kind of sky blue color, but one of the panels was partly gray, I think. We paid $700 for it. Liz named it Quasimodo. It was a little deformed.... Sign in to see full entry.

Screen Tests

One of the bits of wisdom I picked up from my father was the insight that I should not simply accept inherited wisdom in my actions as a father. My father often shared the story of how he came to realize that his parents' ways weren't always the best ways. Some time when he was still a young boy, he... Sign in to see full entry.

Awakenings

In 1984, I ordered an absentee ballot. I was off at college, and it was my first presidential election. I voted for Ronald Reagan. I learned to regret the vote even before the actual election. I voted for Reagan because I wasn't well informed, I wasn't much impressed with Walter Mondale, and I was... Sign in to see full entry.

True Confessions

In honor of the title of this blog, I'm going to tell about confession, Mormon style. Mormons don't have a confessional like Catholics, which as I understand it is a regular ritual, and includes cleansing of the soul by authority of the priest. Seems like an excellent idea, except that actual... Sign in to see full entry.

Missing Memories

One of the first, and most dramatic adventures of my life happened before anything I can remember. I only know about it from family lore, and a newspaper clipping. Yes, before I was a year old, I made the newspaper (in a tiny town in the middle of Utah.) And as is usually the case in my adventures,... Sign in to see full entry.
