Someone left a magazine on the table in the tutorial room, and I flipped through it before my first student came in. I noticed a lot of articles about how Family Values are under siege in America. I have a family, and I'd just as soon it stays a functioning family, so I read one of the articles.... Sign in to see full entry.

Distortions
I got my driver's license renewed today. During the vision test, I couldn't read the line asked for with my right eye. So I've done some testing on my own, and made a troubling discovery. With these glasses, I can't see well out of my right eye. I close the left eye, and everything becomes blurred.... Sign in to see full entry.

Boy, I Feel Safe
Yesterday, I drove to the airport to pick up my wife, who had suddenly been sent off to Spain on business. She had a few adventures there, which she may share with me someday, but what I heard on the drive home was about airports. First, she didn't get her vegetarian meals. The order was placed, but... Unformed Opinions
As I write under the category of Opinion, I feel somehow obligated to weigh in on the Presidential Debates, but I can't say I have much interest in doing so. Mostly, I thought the format awkward, the questions pertinent but largely unanswered, and the comments of the candidates predictable. The... Sign in to see full entry.

Wearing Out
I kind of like old clothes. I don't mean vintage clothes or retro styles, I mean clothes I've had and worn over and over until they are frayed and thinning until I can see through them. I don't throw things away until they fall apart. Maybe I have sensitive skin, and repeated wearing softens a shirt... Sign in to see full entry.

Washing Out
If I remember right, I was baptized 301 times. Once for me, and 300 times for people who were dead. I remember them all, though none of the names except mine. I remember my baptism because, being Mormon, I wasn't baptized as an infant, but at the ripe old age of 8, when a person can be held... Sign in to see full entry.

Rushing to Judgment
One day, not by choice, I listened to Rush Limbaugh. I was visiting my aunt in Florida, and she was a fan. All my mother's relatives are Republicans, and by now most of my father's as well, but Dad is a staunch Democrat, despite being, in his personal life, the most conservative person I know. (He... A Creature of Habit
I do the same thing over and over. When driving along a road, sometimes I will automatically turn where I usually turn, even when I'm not going to the usual place. In time, I will see the mistake, and correct it, paying more attention to what I'm doing, and laughing at myself for being an idiot. It... Sign in to see full entry.

The Legend of Mad Dog
When I was serving a mission for the Mormon Church in Paraguay, there was another missionary whose name was Elder Harris. I was in the country several months before I met him, but when I heard he was coming to my area for a night on his way back to the Mission Headquarters, I was excited. Elder... Independent Declarations
I memorized the first few sentences of the Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the Constitution, like many children of my generation, thanks to School House Rock. "We the people (pause, beat, beat) In order to form a more perfect union.... And for the Declaration, there was that young... Sign in to see full entry.
