Come to think of it,
this is true. I've often experienced this withdrawal into the comfort of previously held opinions on matters political and religious with people when you confront them with new and contrary information. I suppose it is difficult to accept it when we are wrong. Perhaps this resistance is useful in keeping information fairly stable. We may well go completely wacky if we change our minds constantly as we get new info, which may sometimes be wrong too. The really disturbing thing is that we will probably not even realize it when we ourselves are doing the backtrack to strong and wrong opinions. The Nazis knew this and (can't remember now who exactly said this) one of them stated that if you tell people a lie enough times they will believe it even if the evidence is contrary. So much for humans as rational creatures. Interesting article.

It's just a rumor. All my life people have told me how smart I am as a prelude to telling me what I got wrong, which is apparently almost everything. But, hey, I kick butt on those standardized tests.
