PHP and the whole damn thing!

There are not enough hours in the day to learn all the tricks that go towards making a good web page. If I did not have to work full time I could probably make quite a good fist of it, but sadly that is not the case. Most modern web sites for the next generation net, live and die by databases. Without the gory details this is the way you get loyal customers to sign in. Although what you do with all that info is still a mystery to me? More to the point, if you have a shop, it’s easier to replace... Sign in to see full entry.

I’m pleased people still read this blog even though I’ve let things slip very badly. I hardly ever get to read anyone else’s blog. Reading a piece in the Independent newspaper (UK) about how poorly paid novelists are today. Even people who have several titles under their belts, and are considered successful by the industry, struggle to make a living wage from it. If you make £5000 a year all round, you are doing well. Even I could not live on that. Remember that’s only $10,000! But going back to... Sign in to see full entry.

state of play

This is just a brief note to keep this blog open. I’ve been so busy with work and other projects that I haven’t found the time. I no longer think I can make any money writing. The market is too up and down, and just too flimsy. If you take a look at the top earners on this site you might think they are creaming it in, but you are just seeing the peaks and not a cross section of their earnings. So in other words, it don’t pay! Whatever freelance work you might get, does not pay a monthly salary... Sign in to see full entry.

Web sites and Turnkeys

I’m starting to see my way round to writing web sites. Now this is such an overcrowded market, things have to be hot! I think there is still a market for people who know very little about selling on the net and desperately want to make money from this monster called the Internet. The sharp end of the market for everything is Ebay, and they are stuffed with offers for made to measure sites and businesses. Some of them must make money? I know many of these offers are scams and pyramid selling, but... Sign in to see full entry.

Remote Viewing.

Remote Viewing. Article on the radio today about the British Ministry of Defence using psychics in remote viewing experiments. This is basically where they get folk to sit in a darkened room and guess what’s in an envelope. A lucky monkey can come out of it Ok, and it means nothing. Doctor Rhine thought all this up in the 1930’s and little has been done with it. Of course the MOD were made to look a laughing stock, as they tried to get people to spot terrorists and bombs and stuff, and it all... Sign in to see full entry.

Ends This is not the end, or the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning. I think it was old Winnie’ that said that. Of course he was talking about the war, and the fact that they had reached a turning point. This too, for me is a turning point. Dreamweaver FrontPage Net Objects fusion These are all applications I’ve wrestled with over the years, and there are things about all 3 I like. Trouble is I can’t decide. Dreamweaver is an industry standard, and using it shows you are a true... Sign in to see full entry.

Comes around!

There is an old say: everything that goes around comes around. I remember back to when I was studying C programming, and finding that I could not make a penny piece from it. The reason being, that there were very few mutli-national programming houses in rural Rutland. A place where glass in the windows is considered advanced. My next move was to try anything with the basic computer skills, like office work. Once I had exhausted that( about a week) I decided that the most basic computer skill and... Data!

The work with Access and Excel are going well. I’ve based my knowledge on the book data bases I’ve used over the years. One thing which does bother me, is that all my knowledge will amount to nought once I’m in the chair trying to get the job. Will it stand up? Do I know too much? Will I be blinded by my own cleverness? All these things bother me, but next week I have a full 7 days holiday, and intend to get up to speed on all things Microsoft and data. There are dozens of little jobs where I... Sign in to see full entry.

Birds!

With the news that Bernard Matthew’s Turkey farm had been importing contaminated meat, some sad old truth are rearing their head’s once again. Years ago the British wine industry began marketing what it called: English wine! This was only English in the sense that it was bottled in the UK. The pulp came in tankers from France, where they had been carrying out the same sorry practice with Algerian wine. The industry thought it was a great laugh. The German’s even came clean and said they never... Sign in to see full entry.
