WHAT IF...

I've been thinking this morning about nature's way, about how the animal world operates. It seems to me that most species - the four-leggeds - function in a much different way than we humans. Among wolves, coyotes and similar creatures, the female teaches her young the way of their pack and survival... Sign in to see full entry.

FROM MOTHER GOOSE

"There was a crooked man," BY MOTHER GOOSE There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile; He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse, And they all lived together in a little crooked house. Sign in to see full entry.

ABOUT FRED

The spring I was 15 our family went to the wedding of a cousin who lived near Olympia. The bride was the daughter of mom's cousin Kieth, someone she had been close to in her growing-up years. They were all strangers to me, but going to a wedding - just getting out of the house for a festive occasion... Sign in to see full entry.

ONE MAN'S THEORY OF GETTING ALONG IN LIFE

I went to work at SIUE in my mid-twenties, right after the state of Illinois made the purchase of a 2,600 acre tract of farmland near Edwardsville. This was before the planners and architects had measured or designed buildings. The various farms and estates had been occupied for generations by... Sign in to see full entry.

Some accounts of "way back when" had Grandma Lucy married at 13. But the marriage wasn't blessed with children until she... Sign in to see full entry.

LOUSY DIAGNOSIS

Today my son Rich had a follow-up visit with an oncologist at a Cancer center in St. Louis. His PSA numbers following a prostate exam had doubled when he was there for screening on Friday. The medic feels these numbers indicate the disease has metastasized so he's scheduled for a cat scan very soon... Sign in to see full entry.

TO THE BEST OF MY RECOLLECTION

I had been in the steno pool for a couple months when Mary Ellen joined the team. She was tall, even taller than Jo Ann Duncan who'd been the tallest girl in our senior class at 5'10". Like the rest of us, she started with memos and reports before moving up to operating the Xerox Camera or running... Sign in to see full entry.

Blood Sports

In ancient Rome they used to condemn Christians to fight lions in the coloseum. It was a battle to the death - usually the death of the human involved - barbaric in the extreme. We consider ourselves "civilized" in this era. Sending a man to a bloody death is no longer acceptable. Or is it? How many... Sign in to see full entry.
