We passed our grade in spite of being enrolled at Mossyrock for only the last five or six weeks of the school year. I would start 7th Grade in September, Rose would go into 4th, and Jim would be a second-grader. And then, a couple weeks into the summer, Mom told us she had some bad news. She hadn’t... In the eye of the beholder
When I was six or seven years old I asked my mother if I were pretty. She looked thoughtfully over the frame of her glasses for a minute and then said “Just smile. Nobody will know the difference.” I don’t remember exactly why I asked the question, but it must have had to do with my jealousy of “the... Sign in to see full entry.

About Finding Salkum
"Finding Salkum" is the working title of my memoir. Contrary to current writing styles where the author starts a story in the middle, at a point where something dramatic sets everything in a new direction, this is pretty much going back to the beginning and moving forward from that point. One of the... Sign in to see full entry.

The one (maybe only) plus of the media's focus on political conventions
They don't have time to do 47 instant replays of every confrontation between citizens and the police and all the angst and frustration that goes with them. And if there were terrorist attacks or civil unrest problems in the Middle East or Europe, we didn't hear every gory detail. Sometimes I think... Sign in to see full entry.

Bloody Hell & a Slice of Pie
Approved the page design of the book yesterday. Interesting to see the publisher info page, complete with ISBN numbers and all the stuff that academics put into footnotes and bibliographies. They're going to release both paperback and digital versions. We're getting close now - they'll design a... Sign in to see full entry.

Wednesday: This 'n That
The garbage truck rolled by at 6:17 - just a few minutes ago, picked up all evidence of the freak next door's squirrel safaries... (what's the plural of safari?) We've had crashing storms that got here around sunset last night, and another this morning, so himself wasn't out there at the crack of... Sign in to see full entry.

Update: the next door neighbor
Well, two squirrels later, my weary neighbor needed a break, so he left the cage, (bait still inside) on end, with the trip mechanism not set. Not two hours later another and perhaps the last of the neighborhood squirrels came by, nosed around the cage, and for a minute or so I thought it was going... Sign in to see full entry.

The abominable neighbour
e pulled the cage out of the recycling barrel, dumped the waterlogged remains of the possum onto the grass. Pulled on a pair of heavy duty work gloves, brought out a couple of plastic bags with store logos, picked up the dead possum by its long, skinny tail and dropped it in one, tied it shut, then... Possum: the final solution
I watched during the day as Ms. Possum resigned herself to being in the cage, curling up into a ball to sleep after exhausting herself trying to get out. Gary came out on his sun porch now and then to keep an eye on her - moved the cage out of direct sun into the shade of a tree as the day wore on.... Sign in to see full entry.

My neighbor has a problem...
Gary has slowed down a lot over the winter. Retired carpenter, always needs to be busy, got a riding mower so he could keep his yard neat, makes a garden every spring, etc. Couple days ago he told me his garden didn't do much last year, not enough to attract the squirrels even. Tomatoes bloomed but... Sign in to see full entry.
