ESSENTIALS

As I waited in the checkout line – keeping my six foot distance and wearing my face mask, I turned to glance at the shopper behind me. She was wearing the green tee shirt of the store’s shop & deliver service. And I could see she was very young – maybe college age, her eyes were smiling back at me.... Sign in to see full entry.

PRIDE MONTH

In the mid-90s I lived in Seattle, worked in Capitol Hill at Seattle Central College. I walked a couple blocks up Broadway to a Greek restaurant for their famous salad at lunch time, or went around the corner and down the hill to a place that prepared genuine Indian cuisine. Both reasonably priced... Sign in to see full entry.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

CD, you can take your phony righteous indignation and stick it in your ear. I agree that saying 'let em catch the virus' is sick. Surely you of all people recognize irony and sarcasm when you see it. But just in case, here's an exposition on the theme: Your guy won't lead by example. He won't offer... Sign in to see full entry.

SOAP BOX

Some people are uncomfortable thinking about “liberty and justice for all” except as an ironic cliché. It damages all of us when they work to perpetuate white power and the suppression of persons of color by misusing the justice system. I say let white nationalists hold their rah-rah rallies, let... One Good Thing

Real Estate prices have been skyrocketing in Seattle for maybe 20 years - traffic is a veritable beyutch, there's simply not enough highway for all the commuters who can't afford more than a tent under the viaduct or a homeless shelter if they were to live in the city. I bought a little house in the... Sign in to see full entry.

FIGHTING WORDS

We knew the honeymoon was over when we got into a spat while cleaning up after supper one night. The two little guys were already tucked in, having their usual quiet conversation as they prepared to fall asleep. I don’t remember what we were debating at the time, but at one point he said THOSE... Sign in to see full entry.

And now it's a whole 'nother country...

In yesterday's post I described Seattle Central College, located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood - and the remarkable programs taught there. In 1999 there was a big protest, complete with curfews, police using tear gas and rubber bullets on people demonstrating against the WTO convention... Sign in to see full entry.

P.S. to the 9-11 Post

Although the world changed for us after the attack on 9-11, Seattle Central continued to offer the coordinated studies programs for as long as I continued to work there. I retired in 2003 and eventually moved to Illinois to be nearer my kids. Seattle Central continued to thrive and has 'graduated'... Sign in to see full entry.

9-11

In the year 2000, Seattle Central's curriculum included the Coordinated Studies program patterned after the one originated at Evergreen State College in Olympia. A student would register for only one themed coordinated study class worth between 13 and 15 credit hours. At the end of the quarter they... Sign in to see full entry.

And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

After I finished yesterday's post about Seattle Central I got to thinking about people I knew there - the faculty. For instance, it was there I coined the phrase "Three- Point Dad." It's related to basketball based on a hierarchy in my mind that rates the success of dads - could apply to moms, too.... Sign in to see full entry.
