It was my birthday last Saturday. I was forty six years old. Despite the funny cards and shy insults from our children, I really didn’t have a problem with another year passing. My birthday has long since stop representing a coming of age but, in some ways, I felt that this year it really did; or at... Sign in to see full entry.

When he smiles
When Ivan smiles, it is as though the sun has come out; like on one of those dark, grey days when you suspect you’ll never feel it’s warmth again. They were the words his music teacher used at school to describe how she felt about him. She knows he has great talent, via the piano and now the guitar,... Sign in to see full entry.

A cat's eyes still shine
When Susan and I were first married, we got a cat called Pippin. We were living in North London at the time and he came from a local farm just next to the M25. He had been the last of the litter and the owners believed his mother hadn’t licked his eyes properly so he was nearly blind in one eye and... Sign in to see full entry.

If a crocus can deal with the weight on its shoulders...
I love to see the spring bulbs popping their heads out to let us know that warmer, lighter days are on their way again. Daffodils in particular remind me of my grandmother – my mother’s mother – who was the last to die. They used to live next door to us but then, when my grandfather retired, moved... Watch out Duane Eddy
Ivan bought a guitar this week. His house parent at school has been spending some time with him in the evenings, showing him some chords and practicing pieces. He’s very enthusiastic about Ivan’s potential and suggested we get him a guitar as an early birthday present (it’s not until May) so that he... Sign in to see full entry.

It's all science to me
Christian has been on half-term this week but, because he was ill at the start of the week, he has had to concentrate (and concentrate on) his homework into the last couple of days. We rarely have to remind him about it or compel/persuade/bribe him to do so. He could sometimes do more, but he always... Sign in to see full entry.

Christian is much better
but Ivan is now complaining of a 'sort of sicky' feeling and leg aches. Claire woke up feeling out of sorts, with a slight temperature and thus feeling cold all day. Susan was away in London with friends last night and the children and I had a great time. We went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet... Sign in to see full entry.

Still not better
Christian still felt dizzy last night when it was bedtime so he slept with Susan and I slept in his bed. He seemed to have a better sleep than the previous night - comforted obviously by not being on his own. I too had a reasonably good sleep but couldn't help thinking about him and how he was when... We're all a bit tired
today. Everything is taking just that little extra effort and, because of a few failrly sleepless nights, none of us can really bothered to make it. Susan has been tense, as she always is when she doesn't get a good sleep; Claire is floating around without the usual spring in her step; Ivan is... Sign in to see full entry.

Love sick
Thanks for all the supportive comments about Christian's First Love dilemma. We travelled to London late last night so that we could be at the ballet school early this morning for the annual 'meet the teachers and hear how Ivan is getting on' session. Poor Christian woke with a temperature and was a... Sign in to see full entry.
