The Fig Tree

Stands, a sentinel spreading shadows over two backyards full with fruit, dark purple globes empty promises exposed when broken open, their innnards rotten Even the birds do not feed, But scatter the green soft figs to the ground where they slip easily Back into the soil to reappear for next season's harvest. I have two writing competitions to finish stories for

and a report to write, plus a letter and to find a job teaching in the next few weeks for some extra money. In one of the competitions the central character must be a woman. I am going to use the story Web of Love or Love's Web for the story which closes in April and the other one about a girl who nearly gets raped through just being too naive will be for the Griffith Review which is also $10,000 first prize money.
