No TAPS I have been short listed in most competitions I have entered
and received a 'commended' for one major competition, but writing is hard work and I only came back to writing after twenty years away from writing in 2006. I sort of gave up writing for competitions and the like about 1986 and then decided to work on my creative talents (if you could call them that ) about two or three years ago now.

People think being a writer is easy. It is not. I would challenge anyone to say that they have written a book straight out, without rewrites and gotten it accepted for publication. I think even JK Rowlings was rejected a few times too. (HEY bet those publishers are kicking themselves now. ) I think most writers struggle and rewrite and edit continually and it is in the polishing the real jewels emerge. You just have to recognise the worth of the roughs and keep polishing away. It is a trade that you have to keep plugging away and some of the people involved in it will only every be hack writers. But there is still a place for them. Real masterpieces - they are written by well educated or well read people with insights into their environment and the people around them and again they must have natural talent which has to be developed. Dear G-d I am waffling again, sorry.

Norwood, have you won writing competitions before, or are you just trying it for the first time?  I've thought about it before, but that's about as far as it goes.
