To Feast or Not To Feast

The kitchen is full. After today's shopping expedition, wherein I took full advantage of the many sales of holiday feastery, the fridge has in it spiral-cut ham (half price sale), two boneless lamb shanks to join the frozen chicken mentioned in a previous post. (Charley lamented that we did not also... Sign in to see full entry.

First meal of the day

Talking about Italian sausage sandwiches the other day... Well, one thing leads to another, and today I fried up some peppers and sweet onion, and some chicken Italian sausage with herbs and tomato paste, and stuffed it into a big fat bakery bun. I always pinch out most of the soft bread in the... Sign in to see full entry.

Youvarlaika: Greek meatballs in lemon sauce

I found a few pages of recipes that I put in a notebook nearly 50 years ago. One of them I am particularly delighted to find: Greek lamb meatballs in a creamy lemon sauce. Here it is, if you want to try it: Mix thoroughly and shape into walnut-sized balls: 1 lb very lean ground lamb 1 medium onion... Sign in to see full entry.

New in the kitchen

I suppose this goes here... I bought some ceramics from a potter named Karlan Emery. These were on offer online through a potters co-op in the Denver area, https://www.facebook.com/arapahoeceramicsguild/photos/?tab=album&ref= I encourage shopping with local artists. These are people who make most of... Sign in to see full entry.

Ahhh...

...that first sip of fresh coffee! I use the simplest of drip systems, just grounds in a filter in a filter-holder, that drips into a little pitcher. According to a meme on facebook, this coffee-making strategy indicates that I am essentially an anarchist. Maybe so, in the making of coffee, but not... Sign in to see full entry.

Leftovers are finally over!

The bones boiled for some time yesterday and this morning I poured off some of the stock to a smaller soup pot. Carrots, celery, onions, and the last ends of the sweet potatoes went into the pot. Also, the last of the poultry seasoning, some garlic, and a big dash of Yoshida sauce. It's simmering... Sign in to see full entry.

A visual feast

The stuffings, the sweet taters, the cheesecakes, the cranberry sauce are all done, and the bird is in the oven basking for the next three or four hours. The broccoli will be steamed last minute, and the stir-fried brussel sprouts will be done just before that. And Charlie has made a lovely cake! I... Sign in to see full entry.

The Thanksgiving Spread

Here we are, coming up on 10 pm, and I've just stuffed two pans of stuffing into the fridge next to the 20lb turkey that will be the star of tomorrow's table. One is traditional, with celery, parsley, garlic, shallots, and poultry seasoning sauteed in butter and chicken borth, then mixed with hard... Sign in to see full entry.

Chicken salad day!

I simmered up some chicken tenders and overdid them, so they were kinda dry. Since I was a kid and dinners were delayed for my dad to get through the rush hour traffic out of NYC to home on Long Island, I have really disliked overdone chicken. It is dry and turns pasty in the mouth. So the tenders... Sign in to see full entry.
